Improving mechanical properties and shrinkage cracking characteristics of soft clay in deep soil mixing

Thanakorn Chompoorat et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the post-treatment mechanical properties and shrinkage cracking characteristics of soft Bangkok clays treated with ordinary Portland cement and fly ash. The study found that strength and stiffness improvements of stabilised soft clays increased with OPC content but decreased with FA content, while sample shrinkage decreased with increasing FA content. These results suggest that a 15% replacement of OPC with FA can be applied to obtain optimal mixture ratios for deep soil mixing purposes.

Compressive fatigue behavior and failure evolution of additive fiber-reinforced cemented tailings composites

Jiajian Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the uniaxial compressive strength, mechanical properties, and microstructural characteristics of fiber-reinforced cemented tailings backfill (FRCTB) through laboratory tests. The results show that adding fibers improves the compressive strength and mechanical properties of CTB. Fiber addition effectively inhibits crack propagation and increases the peak strain of FRCTB.

Effects of mineral additives and age on microstructure evolution and durability properties of sand-reinforced cementitious mine backfills

Tugrul Kasap et al.

Summary: This study aims to increase the short-/long-term filling performance and reduce cement-related costs by using sand as tailings substitute and GBS or FA as OPC substitution in cementitious paste/mine backfill. The results showed that 30% sand-based CMB offered the best strengths, and strength gain was observed in sand/GBS-based backfills up to 180 days. This study provides a comprehensive report on a cost-effective and viable CMB system that will both make operations profitable/sustainable and prevent environmental damages.

Swell-shrink behaviour of cement with fly ash-stabilised lakebed sediment

Thanakorn Chompoorat et al.

Summary: The research demonstrated that adding fly ash (FA) to cement-stabilised dredged sediments can improve their mechanical properties and resistance to swelling and shrinkage. Test results of the material mixtures showed that adding an appropriate amount of FA can increase the strength and durability of the stabilized sediments.

Summary: This study focused on examining the performance of cement-treated sand through RM and N-f tests. The use of eta/C-iv for assessing mixtures cyclic response was investigated for the first time. Results indicated that the eta/C-iv can predict the cyclic behavior of cement-treated sand under different Portland cement contents and dry densities.

Application of recycled tire polymer fibers and glass fibers for clay reinforcement

Mehdi Valipour et al.

Summary: Soil reinforcement with fibers is a simple and cost-effective method for enhancing the mechanical properties of soft soils, especially when incorporating waste or recycled fibers. The study showed that adding recycled tire polymer fibers and glass fibers can improve the strength and deformation properties of clays, with an optimal fiber percentage for maximum strength gain. The inclusion of fibers, particularly shorter fibers, increased the cohesion of the composite soils, leading to better ductility and load-bearing capacity compared to parent soils.

Reinforcement effect of polypropylene fiber on dynamic properties of cemented tailings backfill under SHPB impact loading

Gaili Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic properties of cemented tailings backfill (CTB) containing polypropylene fibers under dynamic loading, and found that fiber reinforcement can enhance the dynamic strength and inhibit crack development during failure. The findings provide important insights for the overall design of backfilling and cost reduction.

Repurposing of stabilised dredged lakebed sediment in road base construction

Thanakorn Chompoorat et al.

Summary: The research demonstrated that an appropriate content of fly ash can produce the highest material strengths and stiffnesses in stabilized sediments, regardless of the OPC content or curing time. A suitable replacement ratio of cement with fly ash was found to be 15%. The study provided an empirical correlation between the strength and stiffness of adding fly ash on cement-stabilized lakebed sediment for geotechnical and pavement works.
