Carbon dioxide sink in the Arctic Ocean from cross-shelf transport of dense Barents Sea water

Andreas Rogge et al.

Summary: The study reveals the phenomenon of widespread deep lateral carbon injection from the Barents Sea shelf to the Nansen Basin, which increases the carbon sequestration of the Barents Sea region by one-third and provides nutrients to the deep-sea community. This finding, along with other studies on carbon-rich polar water outflow regions, highlights the importance of lateral injection as a global carbon sink.

Rapid Acidification of the Arctic Chukchi Sea Waters Driven by Anthropogenic Forcing and Biological Carbon Recycling

Di Qi et al.

Summary: This study presents a 17-year observational data set in the Chukchi Sea, showing that pH and aragonite saturation state have declined at rates 2-3 times faster than those solely due to increasing atmospheric CO2. The rapid acidification can be attributed to increased dissolved inorganic carbon from ice melt-induced CO2 invasion and subsurface remineralization induced by nutrient-rich Pacific water inflow.

The Changing CO2 Sink in the Western Arctic Ocean From 1994 to 2019

Zhangxian Ouyang et al.

Summary: The Arctic Ocean has undergone a transition from perennial ice coverage to seasonal ice-free conditions in recent decades. This change has led to significant alterations in the carbon cycle and biogeochemical processes in the region. The study found that summer CO2 uptake increased in the Chukchi Sea due to a longer ice-free period, larger open areas, and increased primary production. However, no significant increase in CO2 uptake was observed in the Canada Basin and the Beaufort Sea. This discrepancy can be attributed to sea ice variations and other environmental factors that influence the air-sea pCO(2) gradient.

Climate change drives rapid decadal acidification in the Arctic Ocean from 1994 to 2020

Di Qi et al.

Summary: The Arctic Ocean has been rapidly warming and experiencing sea ice loss in recent decades, leading to significant acidification. The melting sea ice exposes seawater, allowing for the rapid uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide, resulting in sharp declines in pH and aragonite saturation. Future projections suggest that Arctic acidification will continue to worsen.

Regime Shift in Annual Nitrate Concentration in the Upper Southern Chukchi Borderland Responded to the Westward Shift of the Beaufort Gyre

Chunming Dong et al.

Summary: The recent strengthening and westward movement of the Beaufort Gyre in the Arctic, along with the retreat of Arctic sea ice, creates a new hotspot for investigating ecosystem responses to environmental changes over the Chukchi Borderland. This study suggests a regime shift in the nitrate concentration in the southern Chukchi Borderland since 2009, with the primary influence being physical processes rather than biological processes. The westward movement of the Beaufort Gyre narrows the nitrate-rich shelf water flowing over the Chukchi Borderland, leading to lower nitrate concentration in the region since 2009.

On the circulation, water mass distribution, and nutrient concentrations of the western Chukchi Sea

Jaclyn Clement Kinney et al.

Summary: Substantial amounts of nutrients and carbon enter the Arctic Ocean from the Pacific Ocean through the Bering Strait, distributed over three main pathways. The circulation and transport of water masses in the Chukchi Sea and Herald Canyon have significant impacts on nutrient concentrations. Numerical modelling and data analysis are used to study the flow patterns and nutrient fluxes in this region. The findings highlight the importance of long-term monitoring to understand the temporal variability and potential trends.

Mechanisms of Persistent High Primary Production During the Growing Season in the Chukchi Sea

Zijia Zheng et al.

Summary: The Chukchi Sea experiences persistent high primary production during the growing season, with different mechanisms maintaining this productivity in the southern and northern biological hotspots. The nutrient-rich Pacific Winter Water and Bering Summer Water play key roles in driving primary production in these areas. High primary production in the northern Chukchi Sea is sustained by vertical mixing and upwelling of nutrient-rich water, while in the southern area, advecting Bering Summer Water contributes to continued productivity.

Summary: The outflow of Pacific Summer Water through Barrow Canyon is mainly controlled by local winds. The westward flow bifurcates downstream, influenced by the Beaufort Gyre, while the eastward flow from the canyon is restricted in its penetration along the shelfbreak.

Causes of increased dissolved inorganic carbon in the subsurface layers in the western shelfbreak and high latitudes basin in the Arctic Pacific sector

Gangzhi Chu et al.

Summary: The study found that the subsurface DIC maximum layer deepened and expanded northwards into the Makarov Basin during 2008-2015. The increase in DIC concentrations in the Chukchi-East Siberian Shelfbreak and Makarov Basin is mainly attributed to increased local biological degradation and transportation of DIC-rich water from the Chukchi Shelf. Advection was found to control the increase in DIC content in the Makarov Basin, driven by a shift in ocean circulation pattern during 2008-2015.

Modeling the seasonal and interannual variations in nitrate flux through Bering Strait

Junjun Zhou et al.

Summary: The nutrient flux through Bering Strait shows significant interannual variability in winter and summer, with a key role played by the shelf-slope exchange near Cape Navarin. During summer, the poleward nitrate flux is mainly influenced by volume transport through Bering Strait and upstream advection rather than biological activity.

Analysis of the Seasonal and Interannual Variations of Air-Sea CO2 Flux in the Chukchi Sea Using a Coupled Ocean-Sea Ice-Biogeochemical Model

Zijia Zheng et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the oceanic carbon uptake in the Chukchi Sea is influenced by seasonal factors with varying impacts on the total annual carbon sink. The model suggests that the Chukchi Sea serves as a perennial carbon sink of atmospheric CO2. Factors such as sea ice concentration, primary production, and wind speed play significant roles in influencing the air-sea CO2 flux in different seasons.
