Physical drivers of pelagic sargassum bloom interannual variability in the Central West Atlantic over 2010-2020

Nikolaos Skliris et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the growth and drift of sargassum seaweed blooms in the tropical North Atlantic are influenced by patterns and seasonality of winds and currents. In years of large sargassum blooms, the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts southward, contributing to sargassum growth. Additionally, secondary winter blooms were observed in the northern part of the region, likely due to wind-driven equatorial upwelling and strong nutrient transport.

Do Eddies Connect the Tropical Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico?

F. Andrade-Canto et al.

Summary: Using geodesic eddy detection on altimetric data, we found that North Brazil Currents Rings (NBCRs) are unable to bypass the Lesser Antilles as coherent transport structures. Northwestward translating Lagrangian eddies were detected, but they typically experience filamentation and loss of coherence before reaching the Lesser Antilles.

Dynamical geography and transition paths of Sargassum in the tropical Atlantic

F. J. Beron-Vera et al.

Summary: By analyzing data from ocean drifters, this study reveals the similarity between the distribution of probability density and the observed high concentration belt of Sargassum in the tropical Atlantic. It also identifies a northwest basin in the Gulf of Mexico that attracts Sargassum, which is weakly connected to the Sargasso Sea but includes nutrient-rich regions and an upwelling system off the coast of West Africa. Transition Path Theory is then applied to infer potential pathways for Sargassum invasion, showing two possible routes from the African coast into the Intra-Americas Seas.

Persistent meanders and eddies lead to quasi-steady Lagrangian transport patterns in a weak western boundary current

M. B. Gouveia et al.

Summary: This research examines the characteristics and influences of the Brazil Current in the Southwestern Atlantic, as well as its impact on regional circulation through the simulation of climatological Lagrangian coherent structures. The findings highlight the importance of persistent mesoscale structures in responding to oil spills, emergency responses, rescue operations, and other related aspects.

Investigating transport in a tidally driven coral atoll flow using Lagrangian coherent structures

Margaux Filippi et al.

Summary: The field experiment study at Scott Reef in the Timor Sea utilized Lagrangian data analysis methods to predict the formation of a key transport barrier during a critical time of the tidal cycle. The observed drifter trajectories confirmed these predictions, highlighting the importance of Lagrangian approaches in understanding connectivity and water exchanges between atolls and the surrounding ocean.

On the Impact of the Caribbean Counter Current in the Guajira Upwelling System

Alejandro Orfila et al.

Summary: The variability of the La Guajira upwelling system in the Caribbean Sea is strongly influenced by the intensity and location of the Caribbean Low-Level Jet (CLLJ) and regional ocean circulation. Strong easterlies enhance upwelling and primary productivity, while mild winds lead to the flow of the Caribbean Counter Current from the southwestern Caribbean basin towards La Guajira. The location and pathway of the Caribbean Counter Current are controlled by the direction and intensity of the easterlies, particularly the CLLJ.

On the Advection of Upwelled Water on the Western Yucatan Shelf

Jorge. A. Kurczyn et al.

Summary: Upwelling events over the Yucatan Shelf are crucial physical phenomena during spring and summer. While previous studies focused on the eastern side, recent research has shown evidence of upwelling on the western shelf, providing insights into the origin and migration patterns of upwelled water in that region. Understanding the occurrence and impact of these events on the western shelf is important for studying marine ecology and climate change in the area.

Rapid assessment tool for oil spill planning and contingencies

Rafael Meza-Padilla et al.

Summary: The Rapid Oil Spill Hazard Assessment is a tool designed to help managers and planners assess potential impact areas of oil spills, using precomputed scenarios derived from two decades of modeled current data. The tool was demonstrated by applying it to the Perdido region in the western Gulf of Mexico, with 896 oil spill simulations performed and stored in a database for risk and vulnerability analysis.
