Seismically imaged lithospheric delamination and its controls on the Mesozoic Magmatic Province in South China

Haijiang Zhang et al.

Summary: We use a new joint seismic inversion algorithm to image tabular high-velocity anomalies at depths of 90-150 km in the asthenosphere beneath the convergent belt between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks. These anomalies are interpreted as partially destabilized lower lithosphere that initially delaminated around 180-170 Ma and has relaminated to their original position. We conclude that delamination is the most plausible mechanism for the lithospheric modification and the formation of a Mesozoic Basin and Range-style magmatic province in South China.

Crustal shear wave velocity and radial anisotropy beneath Southern Africa from ambient noise tomography

Albert Okrah Malory et al.

Summary: In this study, a new model of radially anisotropic shear velocity in the crust and upper mantle beneath Southern Africa is presented using ambient noise tomography. The findings suggest a complex flow pattern in the crust and upper mantle, likely resulting from multiple thermo-tectonic events.

Fault-controlled regional magmatism and mineral deposition in central Cathaysia-Evidence from ambient noise tomography

Lingmin Cao et al.

Summary: Using ambient noise tomography, this study investigates the relationship between crustal structure and the formation of mineral deposits and magmatism in the central Cathaysian Block, Guangdong Province. Results show that the major faults, GJFZ and ZDFZ, divide the study area into distinct velocity domains. In the Nanling Metallogenic Belt, crustal remelting leads to felsic composition, while in the coastal area, high velocities in the lower crust are associated with Cretaceous magmatic activity. Crustal low-velocity zones between mineral belts may indicate deep-origin magma and its connection to surface deposition through major faults. Secondary NW-trending faults coincide with low velocities and facilitate magmatic migration. The extension of low velocities towards the coast suggests a combined effect of slab rollback and a change in the direction of the subduction system.

Geophysical constraints on the nature of lithosphere in central and eastern Tibetan plateau

Lun Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of a weak mid-to-lower crust in Tibet, potentially flowing towards the southeastern region, while this crustal flow is absent in the Qinling orogen. This weak mid-to-lower crust can decouple the upper crust and lower crust/upper mantle, accommodating active deformation in response to the Indian-Asian convergence.

Evidence for radial anisotropy in the lower crust of the Apennines from Bayesian ambient noise tomography in Europe

C. Alder et al.

Summary: Studying seismic anisotropy in the lithosphere has revealed significant radial anisotropy beneath the Apennines in Europe, differing from previous large-scale studies. This radial anisotropy is attributed to ductile horizontal flow in response to recent and present-day extension in the region.

Pre-collisional extension of microcontinental terranes by a subduction pulley

Erkan Gun et al.

Summary: Microcontinents drifting towards a subduction zone can undergo substantial extension before collision, due to pull from the trenchward part of the subducting plate, as demonstrated by geodynamic numerical experiments. This pre-collisional extension, distinct from post-collisional extension on the overriding plate, is inversely correlated with the size of the microcontinental terrane and imposed convergence velocity. Evidence from locations along the Tethyan belts supports this style of pre-collisional extension, revealing significant tectonic events prior to regular plate boundary processes.
