Evolution of spatiotemporal ground deformation over 30 years in Xi?an, China, with multi-sensor SAR interferometry

Guangrong Li et al.

Summary: Since the 1960s, Xi'an, China, has been facing severe ground subsidence due to groundwater extraction and continuous urban construction. To monitor the spatial and long-term deformation in the city, archived SAR datasets were used to obtain historical deformation data, and the Quantile-Quantile Adjustment (QQA) algorithm was applied to generate more precise long-term deformation time-series. The analysis revealed a complex deformation process in Xi'an, with a maximum cumulative subsidence of over 2 m.

Constraints on the hydrogeological properties and land subsidence through GNSS and InSAR measurements and well data in Salmas plain, northwest of Urmia Lake, Iran

Saeedeh Shahbazi et al.

Summary: The study utilizes GNSS and InSAR data to investigate land displacements in the Salmas plain, northwest Iran. It is found that the hydraulic head in the confined aquifer system controls the vertical land deformation, and drought and overextraction have caused significant changes in the head and land deformation.

Quantifying the influence of long-term overexploitation on deep groundwater resources across Cangzhou in the North China Plain using InSAR measurements

Lin Bai et al.

Summary: This study estimates the exploitable groundwater storage (GWS) and GWS depletion in the confined aquifer system in Cangzhou, China, using InSAR deformation, skeletal storativity estimation, hydraulic head observations, and hydrogeological data. The results highlight the threat posed by long-term overexploitation to water supply security and the irreversible loss of groundwater storage capacity.

Hrishikesh Kumar et al.

Summary: This study utilized datasets from 2007 to 2019 to analyze land subsidence in the National Capital Region of India. The findings suggest that stable groundwater levels can affect the rate of subsidence, while land subsidence continues to occur in the area.

Mapping land subsidence and aquifer system properties of the Willcox Basin, Arizona, from InSAR observations and independent component analysis

Mimi Peng et al.

Summary: This study utilized InSAR technology to investigate land subsidence in the Willcox Groundwater Basin, and employed independent component analysis to analyze the temporal patterns. Two different deformation features were identified in the basin. By integrating InSAR deformation data with groundwater level data, the response of the aquifer system to hydraulic head change was quantified, and the hydromechanical properties of the aquifer system were characterized.

Elastic and Inelastic Ground Deformation in Shanghai Lingang Area Revealed by Sentinel-1, Leveling, and Groundwater Level Data

Yanling Chen et al.

Summary: This study used the PSInSAR technique to investigate the spatio-temporal pattern and mechanism of ground subsidence in Shanghai Lingang New City. The high accuracy of PSInSAR was validated through comparison with leveling data. By analyzing PSInSAR measurements and groundwater level data, the skeleton release coefficients were obtained. The study found that the coastal area underwent both elastic and inelastic deformation. This research provides valuable insights for ground subsidence monitoring and groundwater extraction management.

Characterizing Spatiotemporal Patterns of Land Deformation in the Santa Ana Basin, Los Angeles, from InSAR Time Series and Independent Component Analysis

Kang Zhu et al.

Summary: Excessive extraction and recharge of groundwater cause long-term land subsidence in the Santa Ana basin, Los Angeles, USA, posing a danger to infrastructure and human lives. Traditional parameter estimation methods have limited understanding of the regional spatiotemporal characteristics. In this study, multitemporal InSAR data and independent component analysis (ICA) method were used to analyze the deformation patterns in the basin. The results showed a correlation between seasonal deformation and groundwater level, with a quick response to groundwater changes.

Shuanggen Jin et al.

Summary: The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has attracted global attention for its wide-ranging Earth observations and applications. This paper reviews the progress of GNSS in Earth observation and emerging applications, including positioning and orbiting, meteorology, ionosphere and space weather, reflectometry, earthquake monitoring, and land and structural health monitoring. The review finds that GNSS is not only excelling in traditional positioning applications but also playing a significant role in integrated remote sensing applications.

Inferring decelerated land subsidence and groundwater storage dynamics in Tianjin-Langfang using Sentinel-1 InSAR

Xuguo Shi et al.

Summary: To meet the increasing demand for socioeconomic development, a significant amount of groundwater has been extracted from confined aquifers worldwide. However, the North China Plain has experienced severe groundwater depletion and subsidence over the past six decades. This study uses SAR images to map the ground subsidence in the Tianjin-Langfang area and separates seasonal and long-term signals using continuous wavelet transform. The research finds that the long-term subsidence has significantly slowed down and the depletion rates of groundwater storage have been reduced.
