Impact of the Iquique Ridge on structure and deformation of the north Chilean subduction zone

Bo Ma et al.

Summary: This study accurately maps the structures related to ridge subduction under the marine forearc in the Chilean subduction zone using advanced seismic reflection data processing. The subducting ridge-related topography causes upward bulging of the entire upper plate and the presence of kilometer-scale anticlinal structures. Frontal subduction erosion is observed in the area affected by the subducting ridge, while a small frontal prism and sediment cover are found in the region where isolated seamounts subduct.

Reflection tomography by depth warping: a case study across the Java trench

Yueyang Xia et al.

Summary: Accurate subsurface velocity models are crucial for geological interpretations. This study proposes a method using residual move-out analysis in common image point gathers and non-rigid matching to estimate depth errors for updating velocity models. By calculating a locally smooth displacement field from gather matching, the method improves the accuracy of depth error picks with arbitrary shapes and leads to more accurate interpretations of complex geological structures.

Fluid-rich subducting topography generates anomalous forearc porosity

Christine Chesley et al.

Summary: The study reveals that subducting topography plays a crucial role in the mode of fault slip, influencing the occurrence of large megathrust earthquakes. By using electromagnetic data, the research provides insights into the electrical structure and fluid transport mechanisms associated with subducting seamounts.

Marine forearc structure of eastern Java and its role in the 1994 Java tsunami earthquake

Yueyang Xia et al.

Summary: A previously unrecognized shallow subducting seamount was identified through reprocessed seismic profiles, causing uplift of the overriding plate. Significant back-thrusting was observed at the landward slope of the forearc high, along with the formation of splay faults branching off the landward flank of the subducting seamount. The seamount's location in relation to the 1994 earthquake hypocentre suggests it acted as a seismic barrier to the co-seismic rupture propagation.

Pervasive detachment faults within the slow spreading oceanic crust at the poorly coupled Antilles subduction zone

Boris Marcaillou et al.

Summary: Seismic and bathymetric data from the Northeastern Lesser Antilles Subduction Zone reveal a unique tectonic fabric characterized by sequences of Ridgeward-Dipping Reflectors, which may have been formed during the early stages of exhumation. Plate bending near the trench could have reactivated this fabric, enabling deep fluid circulation and serpentinization of basement rocks. Detachment faults in the oceanic basement at this subduction zone could be responsible for controlling reduced interplate seismicity through deep fluid circulation and serpentinization.
