Upper and lower plane bed definitions revised

Koji Ohata et al.

Summary: This study presents phase diagrams based on existing data to clarify the formative processes of plane beds in sedimentary structures. The results indicate that lower plane beds are formed by bed load movement of sediment particles, while upper plane beds appear under conditions of active suspended load. The study suggests that existing interpretations of fine-grained parallel lamination need to be reconsidered.

Bedforms and sedimentary structures related to supercritical flows in glacigenic settings

Joerg Lang et al.

Summary: Upper-flow-regime bedforms, such as upper-stage-plane beds, antidunes, chutes-and-pools, and cyclic steps, are commonly found in glacigenic depositional environments with abundant meltwater discharge and sediment supply. Important parameters for bedform evolution differ between different depositional environments, including flow confinement, bed slope, aggradation rate, and grain size. Differences in bedform architecture, preservation potential, and sediment characteristics are related to flow strength, settling rates, and bed roughness.

Equilibrium of Self-Formed, Single-Thread, Sand-Bed Rivers

E. Viparelli et al.

Summary: The equilibrium geometry of single-thread rivers is determined by a flow resistance relation and a sediment transport relation for engineered rivers with fixed width. However, in self-formed channels where channel width is not fixed, an additional relation is needed. The new model presented in this study predicts equilibrium geometry based on the conservation of channel and floodplain material, showing comparable results with field observations. Mud load is found to have a strong control on channel patterns and bankfull geometry.
