ENSO modulation of summertime tropospheric ozone over China

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Based on model simulations, ground measurements, and reanalysis data, this study explores the different impacts of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) warm/cold phases on summertime tropospheric O-3 over China. The research finds that summertime surface ozone concentrations in China are positively correlated with the ENSO index, with the largest increases in ozone during El Nino years compared to La Nina years. The ENSO modulation also extends to the middle and even upper troposphere. The analysis suggests that weakened southerlies and ozone flux convergence are the main reasons for the increase in tropospheric ozone over southern China. The study highlights the potential significance of ENSO in regulating tropospheric ozone concentrations in China and its implications for ozone pollution mitigation.

Spatiotemporal patterns and ozone sensitivity of gaseous carbonyls at eleven urban sites in southeastern China

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration and sensitivities of carbonyls in urban areas of nine cities in Fujian Province, China, and analyzed their contributions to ozone concentration. The study found that formaldehyde, acetone, and acetaldehyde were the dominant carbonyl species, primarily originating from photochemical reactions and vehicle emissions. The study also revealed that carbonyl species contributed significantly to ozone formation potential, highlighting the need for stricter control measures.

Isolating the modulation of mean warming and higher-order temperature changes on ozone in a changing climate over the contiguous United States

Junxi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that climate change affects surface ozone primarily through the changes in mean warming and higher-order moments of temperature. Mean warming has a significant impact on ozone concentration, while changes in higher-order moments of temperature can partially offset ozone exceedance. The opposite changes in higher-order moments in different regions lead to different impacts on ozone exceedance.

Impact of Synoptic Weather Types on Ground-Level Ozone Concentrations in Guangzhou, China

Wenhui Liao et al.

Summary: The study found that large-scale synoptic weather circulations have a significant impact on O(3) concentrations in Guangzhou, especially during high O(3) pollution episodes. Weather types are directly related to high and low ozone concentrations, with type A weather leading to high O(3) concentrations and type C weather leading to low O(3) concentrations.

Meteorology driving the highest ozone level occurred during mid-spring to early summer in Shanghai, China

Luyu Chang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have highlighted aggravated surface ozone pollution in China, particularly in Spring and Autumn, with clear distinctions in different cities. In Shanghai, the highest daily and maximum daily 8-h (MDA8) ozone concentrations occur from mid-Spring to early Summer, especially under the G-SW weather pattern. Analysis shows that reducing VOC emissions is effective in mitigating high ozone occurrences under the G-SW weather condition.

Positive and negative influences of typhoons on tropospheric ozone over southern China

Zhixiong Chen et al.

Summary: Based on an ensemble of 17 typhoons that made landfall between 2014 and 2018, this study investigates the positive and negative influences of typhoons on tropospheric ozone over southern China. It is found that during the initial stages of typhoon development, surface ozone is enhanced when typhoons are farther away, but as they approach southern China, the influence switches to reducing ozone. Meteorological conditions such as temperature, winds, and convective activity play a significant role in the production and accumulation of surface ozone during typhoon events.

Ozone variability induced by synoptic weather patterns in warm seasons of 2014-2018 over the Yangtze River Delta region, China

Da Gao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the characteristics of O-3 variations in the Yangtze River Delta during the warm seasons from 2014 to 2018, and identified meteorological controlling factors influencing O-3 concentrations. Five dominant synoptic weather patterns were identified, each favoring an increase in O-3 concentrations through different meteorological mechanisms. The intensity of these synoptic weather patterns was found to have a significant impact on O-3 inter-annual variation.

Effectiveness of emission control in reducing PM2.5 pollution in central China during winter haze episodes under various potential synoptic controls

Yingying Yan et al.

Summary: Mitigating severe particle pollution in autumn and winter is crucial to improving air quality in China. This study uses synoptic classification and emission control simulations to find that winter haze pollution in central China is mainly influenced by local emissions under specific weather conditions. Different synoptic patterns contribute to pollution episodes, with both local and transported sources impacting PM2.5 levels in the region. Coordination of local and regional emission control actions is essential to effectively reduce haze pollution in different synoptic conditions.
