Chronic stress, neuroinflammation, and depression: an overview of pathophysiological mechanisms and emerging anti-inflammatories

Sameer Hassamal

Summary: Chronic stress can lead to neuroinflammation and depression. Neuroinflammation affects a significant portion of patients with MDD and is associated with a more severe and treatment-resistant condition. Inflammation is not exclusive to depression and may be a common risk factor for various mental illnesses and metabolic disorders. The link between chronic stress and neuroinflammation is associated with dysregulation of the HPA axis and immune cell glucocorticoid resistance, leading to peripheral and central inflammation.

Stress-induced depressive-like behavior in male rats is associated with microglial activation and inflammation dysregulation in the hippocampus in adulthood

Joao Paulo Bras et al.

Summary: This study suggests that male rats with high-CORT stress responsiveness exhibit increased anhedonia and passive coping responses in adulthood following peripubertal stress exposure. Additionally, exposure to peripubertal stress leads to increased hippocampal TNF-alpha expression, which correlates with passive coping responses. Furthermore, peripubertal stress has long-term effects on hippocampal microglia, particularly in high-CORT stress-responsive rats.
