Morbidity and mortality in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A narrative review

Lorena Fernandez de la Cruz et al.

Summary: Current knowledge on the general somatic health of individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is limited. However, accumulating evidence suggests an association between OCD and autoimmune diseases, metabolic and circulatory system diseases. Preliminary results also suggest potential links with dementia, insomnia, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, migraine, and chronic pain. The risk of death by suicide in OCD is well established, but more research is needed on specific causes of death.

Risk of specific cardiovascular diseases in obsessive-compulsive disorder

Kayoko Isomura et al.

Summary: Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder have a moderately increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, particularly venous thrombo-embolism and heart failure. This risk is independent of other medical history, familial factors, and psychiatric comorbidities. It suggests the need for lifestyle interventions to reduce cardiovascular morbidity risk in OCD patients.
