Suicidal behaviour in first-episode psychosis: The relevance of age, perceived stress and depressive symptoms

Regina Vila-Badia et al.

Summary: This study explores suicidal behavior and its relevant factors in patients with first episode psychosis (FEP) compared to a healthy control group. The results show that FEP patients have a higher prevalence of suicide behavior. Younger age and depressive symptoms are the main predictors for suicide ideation and attempts, while perceived stress and hopelessness are the most relevant predictors for suicide risk. Symptoms do not appear to be significant factors in suicide behavior.

Resilience and its inter-relationship with symptomatology, illness course, psychosocial functioning, and mediational roles in schizophrenia: A systematic review

Summary: In patients with schizophrenia, higher levels of resilience are associated with lower severity of specific symptoms, different aspects of illness course, internal factors, and psychosocial functioning. Resilience also acts as a mediator in pathways leading to depression, functioning, and quality of life in schizophrenia spectrum conditions.

Development of a Checklist for Predicting Suicidality Based on Risk and Protective Factors: The Gwangju Checklist for Evaluation of Suicidality

Sung-Wan Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a checklist to assist mental health clinicians in predicting and managing suicidality. A literature review was conducted to identify risk and protective factors for suicide, and a checklist was developed based on these factors. The checklist includes fixed risk factors, changeable risk factors, and manageable risk factors. The development of this checklist is expected to improve the assessment of suicidal behavior by mental health clinicians.

Emotional abuse and perceived stress: The most relevant factors in suicide behavior in first-episode psychosis patients

Marta Diago et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with first-episode psychosis were more likely to exhibit suicidal behavior compared to the healthy control group, with emotional abuse being the most relevant type of childhood trauma in suicide ideation and suicide risk. Additionally, perceived stress was found to play an important role in suicide ideations, suicide attempt, and suicide risk, even after controlling for other relevant variables.

The effects of patient personality traits and family cohesion on the treatment delay for patients with first-episode schizophrenia spectrum disorder

Anna Jo et al.

Summary: The study found that delayed treatment of first-episode schizophrenia patients was associated with older age, higher clinical symptom scores, higher conscientiousness of patients, and poorer family cohesion. This suggests that family dynamics and patient personality traits play a role in determining timely access to mental health services for patients with early psychotic symptoms.

The Importance of Suicide Risk Formulation in Schizophrenia

Isabella Berardelli et al.

Summary: Suicide is a significant cause of early death in patients with schizophrenia, with a high percentage attempting suicide in their lifetime. Suicide risk formulation, based on data gathered from suicide risk assessment, assigns a level of risk crucial for treatment choice and management of high-risk patients. Extending the model to patients with schizophrenia allows for a comprehensive evaluation of their clinical context and history to better apply suicide prevention strategies.

Considerations for using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test to assess cognitive flexibility

Stephanie Miles et al.

Summary: This critical review examines the changes in the WCST, differences in existing scoring methods, key terminology and its relation to cognitive flexibility assessment, and issues with the use of WCST in the literature. It particularly focuses on the confusion between 'perseverative responses' and 'perseverative errors' and the inconsistencies in scoring these variables, providing recommendations for future research and clinical practice using the WCST.
