Emotion Reactivity and Suicide Ideation Among Chinese Adolescents: A Longitudinal Serial Mediation Model

Huijiao Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential mechanism underlying the relationship between emotion reactivity and suicide ideation. The results indicate that distress intolerance and depressive symptoms mediate the association between emotion reactivity and suicide ideation. Interventions targeting emotion reactivity may be effective in reducing the risk of developing suicide ideation.

The role of emotion regulation and intolerance to uncertainty on the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and distress

Salvatore Gullo et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has negative consequences on global mental health, but research on the psychological factors influencing distress is limited. This study examines the role of Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) and emotional regulation in COVID-19-related distress. The results suggest that IU partially mediates the effect of fear of COVID-19 on depression, anxiety, and stress. Emotional regulation, particularly cognitive reappraisal, also has a mediational effect. The findings highlight the importance of targeting IU and emotional regulation in developing tailored treatments to reduce the negative consequences of the pandemic.

Individual Differences in Emotion Regulation and Cardiovascular Responding to Stress

Siobhan M. Griffin et al.

Summary: The study found that individual differences in emotion regulation styles are related to cardiovascular responses, with a greater use of reappraisal leading to a challenge-oriented response and a greater use of suppression leading to exaggerated cardiovascular response. The emotional valence of the stressor may play a crucial role in influencing the effects of different emotion regulation strategies on cardiovascular responses during stress.

Limited Access to Emotion Regulation Strategies Mediates the Association Between Positive Urgency and Sustained Binge Drinking in Patients with Alcohol Use Disorder

Maria Pepe et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for binge drinking (BD) in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The results showed that positive urgency and limited access to emotion regulation strategies were risk factors for sustained BD in AUD patients. The effects of impulsivity on BD were mediated by difficulties in emotion regulation.

Neural Correlates of Emotion Regulation in Adolescents and Emerging Adults: A Meta-analytic Study

Elena Pozzi et al.

Summary: This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate emotion reactivity and regulation processes in healthy developmental samples. The results showed that explicit emotion regulation activated frontal, temporal, and parietal regions, while implicit regulation and emotion reactivity were associated with activation in the amygdala and posterior temporal regions. Adolescents exhibited more consistent activation of specific regions compared to emerging adults during implicit regulation.

Anxiety and depression symptoms after virological clearance of COVID-19: A cross-sectional study in Milan, Italy

Daniele Tomasoni et al.

Summary: A study found that 30% of COVID-19 recovered patients displayed pathological anxiety or depression, and 52.4% showed persistent symptoms. Pathological patients with HADS-A/D were more likely to report symptom persistence even after adjusting for age, gender, and disease severity. Therefore, psychological assessments should be encouraged in follow-up of COVID-19 patients.

The Roles of Physical Activity, Exercise, and Fitness in Promoting Resilience During Adolescence: Effects on Mental Well-Being and Brain Development

Britni R. Belcher et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a critical period for mental well-being development, where physical activity, exercise, and aerobic fitness can reduce mental health risks by enhancing top-down control over bottom-up processes in the brain. Strengthening individual brain regions and neural circuits through PA, exercise, and aerobic fitness may improve emotional and behavioral regulation, promoting mental health resilience during adolescent development.
