Digital therapeutics (DTx) like game-based DTx have shown potential as alternative treatments for pediatric ADHD. Our study revealed that game-based DTx improved inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, but medication was more effective.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive performance of machine learning models in detecting attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sleep problems using data obtained from personal digital devices. The results showed that the machine learning models had reasonable predictive performance for ADHD and sleep problems. The study developed a machine learning method for early detection or screening using digital phenotypes in children's daily lives.

Pilot study of a mobile application-based intervention to induce changes in neural activity in the frontal region and behaviors in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and/or intellectual disability

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of mobile application-based interventions in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and intellectual disability (ID) and their effects on attention and cognitive function. The results showed that the intervention induced changes in neural activity and behavior, improving attention and cognitive function in children with ADHD and/or ID. This suggests that mobile application-based digital therapeutics may have great potential for helping children with neurodevelopmental disorders who need continuous treatment.

Examining clinicians' concerns delivering telemental health interventions directly to autistic individuals during COVID-19

Summary: This study investigated the perspectives of 55 clinicians on adopting telemental health interventions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results showed that clinicians had low levels of concern over challenges and barriers associated with TMH, and they were more likely to predict these challenges than to have actually experienced them. Challenges specific to ASD were identified, including exacerbation of in-person ASD-related challenges and difficulties with trust and remote social behavior. Clinician-level factors, such as technological competence and professional experience with ASD, did not significantly impact TMH perceptions.

Healthcare professionals, on the other hand, are more concerned about barriers such as lack of devices, unfamiliarity with the technology, poor internet connection quality, and severity of ASD.

Clinical Evaluation of Digital Therapeutics: Present and Future

Summary: Digital therapeutics (DTx) products are typically evaluated using randomized clinical trials (RCTs), similar to conventional drugs or medical devices. However, novel approaches such as real-world data and digital biomarkers are also utilized. Most DTx evaluations use parallel-group designs with statistical hypothesis testing. Blinding is often omitted due to practical issues, and various comparator groups are involved. DTx products can be evaluated in home-based settings and delivered through the internet. Other evaluation approaches include retrospective analyses using insurance claims or usage data, and the use of digital biomarkers to improve endpoint objectivity.

A meta-analysis on the effect of telemedicine on the management of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents

Enhancing neural markers of attention in children with ADHD using a digital therapeutic

Summary: The study found that digital therapeutics targeting the MFT neural circuitry can improve attentional neural and behavioral measures in children with ADHD and enhance parent-reported clinical symptom improvements. Importantly, relationships between neural and behavioral cognitive improvements were observed, showing that intervention-related neural gains were correlated with improvements in attentional behavioral tasks.
