The management of ADHD in children and adolescents: bringing evidence to the clinic: perspective from the European ADHD Guidelines Group (EAGG)

David Coghill et al.

Summary: ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents, and timely interventions are a priority. However, current research reports and reviews on interventions for ADHD often lack consistency and are difficult to interpret. Clinicians need to consider methodological issues and gaps in the evidence when evaluating treatments for ADHD.

Effects of game-based digital therapeutics on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents as assessed by parents or teachers: a systematic review and meta-analysis

SuA Oh et al.

Summary: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a childhood-onset disorder characterized by pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Digital therapeutics (DTx) like game-based DTx have shown potential as alternative treatments for pediatric ADHD. Our study revealed that game-based DTx improved inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, but medication was more effective.

Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Sleep Problems With Wearable Data in Children

Won-Pyo Kim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive performance of machine learning models in detecting attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sleep problems using data obtained from personal digital devices. The results showed that the machine learning models had reasonable predictive performance for ADHD and sleep problems. The study developed a machine learning method for early detection or screening using digital phenotypes in children's daily lives.

Pilot study of a mobile application-based intervention to induce changes in neural activity in the frontal region and behaviors in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and/or intellectual disability

Sungji Ha et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of mobile application-based interventions in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and intellectual disability (ID) and their effects on attention and cognitive function. The results showed that the intervention induced changes in neural activity and behavior, improving attention and cognitive function in children with ADHD and/or ID. This suggests that mobile application-based digital therapeutics may have great potential for helping children with neurodevelopmental disorders who need continuous treatment.

Examining clinicians' concerns delivering telemental health interventions directly to autistic individuals during COVID-19

Lucy Adams et al.

Summary: This study investigated the perspectives of 55 clinicians on adopting telemental health interventions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results showed that clinicians had low levels of concern over challenges and barriers associated with TMH, and they were more likely to predict these challenges than to have actually experienced them. Challenges specific to ASD were identified, including exacerbation of in-person ASD-related challenges and difficulties with trust and remote social behavior. Clinician-level factors, such as technological competence and professional experience with ASD, did not significantly impact TMH perceptions.

Expectations and Concerns about the Use of Telemedicine for Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Parents and Healthcare Professionals

Alessandra Gabellone et al.

Summary: This study compares the expectations and concerns of healthcare professionals and parents of children with ASD regarding the use of telemedicine for diagnosis or treatment. Parents have higher expectations for telemedicine as an alternative or supplement to in-person diagnosis and traditional intervention, but express greater concern about parental involvement/supervision and changes in the behavior of children with ASD. Healthcare professionals, on the other hand, are more concerned about barriers such as lack of devices, unfamiliarity with the technology, poor internet connection quality, and severity of ASD.

Clinical Evaluation of Digital Therapeutics: Present and Future

Ki Young Huh et al.

Summary: Digital therapeutics (DTx) products are typically evaluated using randomized clinical trials (RCTs), similar to conventional drugs or medical devices. However, novel approaches such as real-world data and digital biomarkers are also utilized. Most DTx evaluations use parallel-group designs with statistical hypothesis testing. Blinding is often omitted due to practical issues, and various comparator groups are involved. DTx products can be evaluated in home-based settings and delivered through the internet. Other evaluation approaches include retrospective analyses using insurance claims or usage data, and the use of digital biomarkers to improve endpoint objectivity.

A meta-analysis on the effect of telemedicine on the management of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents

Maryam Bemanalizadeh et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of telemedicine treatments on paediatric ADHD symptom domains. The results showed small effect sizes of telemedicine on inattention/cognitive function, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and oppositional behaviours. Satisfaction with the treatment was generally higher among parents than teachers.

Enhancing neural markers of attention in children with ADHD using a digital therapeutic

Courtney L. Gallen et al.

Summary: The study found that digital therapeutics targeting the MFT neural circuitry can improve attentional neural and behavioral measures in children with ADHD and enhance parent-reported clinical symptom improvements. Importantly, relationships between neural and behavioral cognitive improvements were observed, showing that intervention-related neural gains were correlated with improvements in attentional behavioral tasks.

Lifetime evolution of ADHD treatment

Federico Mucci et al.

Summary: ADHD, traditionally viewed as a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting children and adolescents, is also present in adulthood but often overlooked due to comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders. Pharmacological treatment, particularly stimulants, show prompt efficacy and safety, but individual clinician experience still greatly influences management. Further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm or deny the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments across different age groups.

Mobile app-based chatbot to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoeducation for adults with attention deficit: A development and feasibility/usability study

Sooah Jang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of using a mobile-based chatbot application to improve attention deficit and its associated psychiatric symptoms. The chatbot group showed significant improvement in attention deficit symptoms, and the frequency and duration of chatbot usage were correlated with the degree of symptom improvement.
