Genome-wide identification and expression of the lipoxygenase gene family in jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) in response to phytoplasma infection

Jidong Li et al.

Summary: This study identified 13 LOX genes in the jujube genome, classified into two categories based on phylogenetic analysis. Gene duplication events were tracked, with two sets of tandem repeats found on chromosome 2. Predicted promoters of ZjLOXs showed numerous cis elements that may respond to phytohormones, light, and biological stresses. Transcriptomic, proteomic, and qRT-PCR analyses suggested that certain ZjLOX genes may play important roles in the jujube-phytoplasma interaction.

Plasticity of bud outgrowth varies at cauline and rosette nodes in Arabidopsis thaliana

Franziska Fichtner et al.

Summary: Detailed analysis of branching in Arabidopsis under different genetic and environmental conditions reveals varying plasticity of branching at cauline and rosette nodes. The initiation of buds in leaf axils and the availability of resources, nutrients, and plant hormones regulate the plasticity of shoot branching. Our study shows that there is no tradeoff between cauline and rosette bud outgrowth, and the number of cauline branches is closely related to flowering time. Furthermore, rosette branch number exhibits high plasticity and is influenced by genetic background, flowering time, light intensity, and temperature.

Genomic analyses of diverse wild and cultivated accessions provide insights into the evolutionary history of jujube

Mingxin Guo et al.

Summary: The Chinese jujube is an important perennial fruit tree crop with economic, ecological, and nutritional value. Through population genomic analysis, it was found that jujube's primary domestication center was in the Shanxi-Shaanxi area of China, before it spread into East and South China. Divergence events analysis suggested a divergence between Ziziphus acidojujuba and Ziziphus jujuba around 2.7 million years ago, indicating a possible long pre-domestication period. The study also identified genetic markers associated with seed-setting rate and fruit weight regulation in jujubes, providing insights into the genetic basis of jujube evolution and domestication.

Witches' Broom Disease of Lime Contributes to Phytoplasma Epidemics and Attracts Insect Vectors

A. M. Al-Subhi et al.

Summary: The Witches' Broom Disease of Lime (WBDL) caused by an insect-transmitted phytoplasma has led to a significant decrease in lime production in multiple countries. Research has shown that the gene encoding SAP11 of WBDL phytoplasma interacts with lime TCP transcription factors, inducing witches' broom symptoms and attracting insect vectors. High phytoplasma titers and expression levels of SAP11 were found in symptomatic leaves, suggesting that affected parts of trees contribute to WBDL epidemics by supporting higher phytoplasma levels and attracting vectors.

Genome-wide identification of jujube witches' broom phytoplasma effectors revealed the role of SJP3 in inducing phyllody

Mingsheng Deng et al.

Summary: Jujube witches' broom (JWB), a devastating disease caused by 'Candidatus Phytoplasma ziziphi', induces symptoms such as phyllody in infected plants. Effector proteins secreted by phytoplasmas play a key role in inducing these symptoms, with SJP3 identified as a potential effector inducing phyllody in infected jujube plants. The study sheds light on the pathogenesis of JWB disease and its interaction with MADS-box genes related to floral organ identity and flowering time.

Parasitic modulation of host development by ubiquitin-independent protein degradation

Weijie Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates how SAP05 protein effectors from insect-vectored plant pathogenic phytoplasmas control several plant developmental processes by prolonging host lifespan and inducing witches' broom-like proliferations of leaf and sterile shoots. These effectors act by mediating the concurrent degradation of SPL and GATA developmental regulators via a process that relies on hijacking the plant ubiquitin receptor RPN10.

Genomic insights into the fast growth of paulownias and the formation of Paulownia witches' broom

Yabing Cao et al.

Summary: Paulownias are one of the fastest growing trees in the world, but often suffer significant loss of wood production due to infection by Paulownia witches' broom phytoplasmas. This study sequenced and assembled the nuclear genome of Paulownia fortunei, revealing insights into its rapid growth habit and regulatory mechanisms for PaWB formation. Comparative transcriptome analyses identified modules related to cambial growth and development, photosynthesis, and defense responses.

Jujube witches' broom phytoplasma effectors SJP1 and SJP2 induce lateral bud outgrowth by repressing the ZjBRC1-controlled auxin efflux channel

Junyong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study showed that two phytoplasma effectors, SJP1 and SJP2, induce witches' broom and increase lateral branches in jujube trees by repressing the auxin efflux channel. This finding suggests a potential strategy for controlling phytoplasma-associated diseases and a resource for creating new cultivars with varying degrees of shoot branching through gene editing breeding.
