Reduced Apela/APJ system expression in patients with pulmonary artery hypertension secondary to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Yuexin Hu et al.

Summary: This study observed the differential expression of the endogenous Apela/APJ system in COPD patients with or without PAH. The results showed that the serum level of endogenous Apela in COPD+PAH patients was significantly lower than those in the control and COPD groups. Pathological examination revealed intima thickening and muscularization of pulmonary arterioles in COPD+PAH patients, as well as decreased expression of Apela/APJ. Therefore, corrective action targeting the diminished Apela/APJ system may be a promising therapeutic strategy for PAH in the future.

Regulatory Mechanisms of Prg4 and Gdf5 Expression in Articular Cartilage and Functions in Osteoarthritis

Yoshifumi Takahata et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the research progress on the functions and regulatory mechanisms of lubricin and growth differentiation factor 5 (Gdf5) in osteoarthritis (OA), as well as their roles in maintaining articular cartilage homeostasis and the development of OA. Molecular targeting of Prg4 and Gdf5 is expected to provide new insights into the etiology, pathogenesis, and potential treatment of OA.

Seven ferroptosis-specific expressed genes are considered as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of cigarette smoke-induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Zhiwei Lin et al.

Summary: This study identified 7 potential ferroptosis-related hub genes (FRHGs) as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of COPD. The study also revealed key pathways involving ferroptosis in cigarette smoke-induced COPD development and constructed an mRNA-miRNA network to explore their interactions. Therefore, this research is of great importance in gaining a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying COPD development.

Immunomodulatory potential of apolipoproteins and their mimetic peptides in asthma: Current perspective

Srijit Ghosh et al.

Summary: Apolipoproteins play important immunomodulatory roles in asthma, and apoA-I and apoE have been shown to have protective effects. The development of apolipoprotein mimetics may be a strategy for treating pulmonary diseases.

Blood Adipokines/Cytokines in Young People with Chronic Bronchitis and Abdominal Obesity

Alena Dmitrievna Khudiakova et al.

Summary: The study explored the associations between adipokines/cytokines and chronic bronchitis in young people with abdominal obesity. Higher levels of adipokines and cytokines were found in patients with chronic bronchitis, while some other factors were lower. The probability of having chronic bronchitis increased with higher levels of lipocalin-2, GIP, and TNFa in the context of abdominal obesity.

MitoQ protects against hyperpermeability of endothelium barrier in acute lung injury via a Nrf2-dependent mechanism

Mengyuan Cen et al.

Summary: The study indicates that excessive ROS production and mitochondrial dysfunction during ALI and ARDS aggravate inflammation, and the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant mitoQ plays a crucial role in mitigating these effects, maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis, inhibiting endothelial cell apoptosis, alleviating endothelial disruption, and regulating lung inflammation through the Nrf2-MafF/ARE pathway.

Reshma Aziz Merchant et al.

Summary: This study found that higher FFMI and lower FM/FFM in the high BMI group were associated with better functional outcomes. The prevalence of low muscle mass was higher in the normal BMI group. Females had significantly higher FMI and FM/FFM, while males had significantly higher FFMI. Additionally, the highest FFMI tertile group had better physical function and lower prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and sarcopenia.

Obesity Attenuates Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury by Modulating the STAT3-SOCS3 Pathway

Shih-Wei Wu et al.

Summary: Obesity protects lungs from ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) by upregulating SOCS3, suppressing the inflammatory pathway, and enhancing AFC related to WNK4. However, WNK4 activation mainly comes from NF kappa B downstreaming, rather than SOCS3 upregulation. JAK2-STAT3/NF kappa B signaling dominates the pathogenesis of VILI, and further investigation is needed to understand the interaction between SOCS3 and WNK4 in modulating VILI in obesity.
