Association between folic acid use during pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus: Two population-based Nordic cohort studies

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the association between folic acid use during pregnancy and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in two population-based Nordic cohorts. The results showed that self-reported folic acid use had slightly higher or lower odds for GDM in Norway and Sweden respectively, which are not clinically significant. However, prescribed folic acid use had higher odds for GDM, likely due to the specific comorbidities and co-medications of the women using it. Therefore, the recommendations for folic acid use in pregnancy should remain unchanged.
