Late-onset neonatal sepsis: genetic differences by sex and involvement of the NOTCH pathway

Timothy H. Ciesielski et al.

Summary: Late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS) is a rare and severe condition with high mortality rates. This study aimed to identify genetic variants associated with LOS. The results showed that genetic susceptibility to LOS is sexually dimorphic and NOTCH signaling plays a role in determining risk. There were also sex-specific associations between genes and sepsis, highlighting the importance of sex-specific treatment strategies.

Mendelian Randomization

Ewan Birney

Summary: Mendelian randomization borrows statistical techniques from economics to analyze the effects of various factors on human biology and disease. By using genetic variation as instrumental variables, it can disentangle the effects of these factors on different outcomes.

Neuroinflammation, Early-Life Adversity, and Brain Development

Susan L. Andersen

Summary: The aim of this article is to investigate how early exposure to adversity interacts with inflammation to alter brain maturation. Adversity and inflammation are both significant risk factors for psychopathology. The effects of adversity on brain development in children and adolescents are explored through literature review and animal experiments. It is found that exposure to adversity increases inflammation, particularly during developmental stages when the immature brain is highly sensitive to experiences. Microglia, which scavenge cellular debris and prune synapses, play a vital role in this process. The interactions between microglia and the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA are discussed in the context of development and adversity.

Obesity attenuates inflammation, protein catabolism, dyslipidaemia, and muscle weakness during sepsis, independent of leptin

Wouter Vankrunkelsven et al.

Summary: The study found that leptin does not mediate the protective effect of obesity against sepsis-induced muscle wasting and weakness in mice. Instead, obesity, independent of leptin, attenuates inflammation, protein catabolism, and dyslipidemia, pathways that may play a role in muscle protection.

Summary: Newborn infants are susceptible to sepsis and inflammation of different organs. Neuroinflammation is associated with long-term adverse neuronal outcomes. This study found significant changes in the CSF proteome under neuroinflammation, which may be related to sepsis-affected neurodevelopment.

Anti-Inflammatory Nutrients and Obesity-Associated Metabolic-Inflammation: State of the Art and Future Direction

Giuseppe Grosso et al.

Summary: There is growing evidence supporting the role of dietary factors in systemic low-grade chronic inflammation. Plant-based diets, as well as higher intakes of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil, have shown significant effects on inflammation biomarkers. Dairy products have the best anti-inflammatory benefits, while red meat and eggs have neutral effects. Specific macronutrients, non-nutrient phytochemicals (polyphenols), and dietary polyphenols and oligopeptides may play a role in regulating inflammation and the immune system.

Risk of Dementia or Cognitive Impairment in Sepsis Survivals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: Recent research suggests that sepsis survivors may be at higher risk for developing dementia, but the association with cognitive impairment is less clear. Severe sepsis appears to be more strongly associated with increased risk of dementia or cognitive impairment.

Benjamin Demarco et al.

Summary: This review discusses the impact of pyroptosis on tissue damage and inflammation, with a particular focus on injury-induced and autoimmune arthritis. Gasdermins, the executors of pyroptosis, play an important role in regulating cell death by forming pores at the plasma membrane.

Frequency and mortality of sepsis and septic shock in China: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Yan-Cun Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the frequency and mortality of sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock in China, and found that they were higher compared to North America and Europe countries. The study highlighted the severe lack of epidemiological data on sepsis in the emergency department, indicating more research is urgently needed in this area.

Advanced Glycation End Products and Inflammation in Type 1 Diabetes Development

Chenping Du et al.

Summary: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The consumption of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) found in Western diets is believed to be a major environmental risk factor for T1D, as it interacts with the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE). The progression of T1D varies in individuals, providing an opportunity for prevention strategies. Targeting the AGE-RAGE axis may be a potential therapeutic strategy for T1D prevention.

Sepsis-induced immunosuppression: mechanisms, diagnosis and current treatment options

Di Liu et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a common complication of combat injuries and trauma, characterized by life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Immunosuppression, one of the major causes of septic death, can be reversed and host resistance can be established by targeting it.

Jorge Maspero et al.

Summary: Chronic inflammatory airway diseases, such as asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis, are a global health concern. Understanding the pathophysiology of type 2 inflammation, which involves both the innate and adaptive immune systems, is crucial for improving patient outcomes. Targeted therapies based on this understanding offer hope for better management of these diseases.
