Trabecular Bone Score and Osteoprotegerin as Useful Tools in the Assessment of Bone Deterioration in Acromegaly

Aleksandra Jawiarczyk-Przybylowska et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) in acromegalic patients and analyze their association with selected bone markers. The results showed that acromegalic patients have altered bone microstructure indicated by decreased TBS, but no significant difference in BMD was observed.

Obesity and Bone Health: A Complex Relationship

Ana Pinar-Gutierrez et al.

Summary: Recent scientific evidence suggests that obese patients, especially those with higher visceral adipose tissue content, have an increased risk of fractures. This contradicts the belief that obesity offers protection against fractures. Obesity can accentuate age-related changes in older individuals, leading to a higher risk of falls and fractures. Factors such as chronic proinflammatory status, altered adipokine secretion, vitamin D deficiency, insulin resistance, and reduced mobility contribute to the greater risk in obese older individuals.

Trabecular Bone Score as a Reliable Measure of Lumbar Spine Bone Microarchitecture in Acromegalic Patients

Summary: This study found that acromegalic patients have significantly lower trabecular bone scores (TBS) compared to healthy controls, indicating impaired lumbar spine microarchitecture. Uncontrolled disease and hypogonadism contribute to the deterioration of TBS in acromegaly.

Trabecular bone score and bone mineral density in patients with long-term controlled acromegaly

Maria Calatayud et al.

Summary: Although bone mineral density (BMD) may not indicate increased vertebral fracture risk in patients with long-term controlled acromegaly, trabecular bone score (TBS) can provide valuable information on bone microstructure deterioration. The study suggests that TBS is a useful tool for monitoring bone status changes in acromegalic patients.

Vertebral Fractures Occur Despite Control of Acromegaly and Are Predicted by Cortical Volumetric Bone Mineral Density

Martin Kuzma et al.

Summary: Recent studies in acromegaly patients found a relationship between vertebral fractures and bone density parameters, with cortical bone density in the hip identified as the best predictor for fractures. Additionally, trabecular bone score was negatively associated with blood glucose levels, potentially indicating a link between bone health and glycemic control.

Influence of Disease Activity and Body Composition Parameters on Cross-Sectional Area of the Median Nerve in Acromegalic Patients

Ivana Sagova et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the enlargement of the median nerve in patients with acromegaly, which is positively correlated with IGF-1 levels and independent of the duration of the disease. The enlargement of the median nerve in acromegalic patients is also dependent on lean body mass rather than fat body mass.

Summary: Acromegalic patients have impaired bone quality despite normal density. Achieving normal growth hormone secretion rapidly leads to the normalization of bone turnover. Surgical cure results in a greater reduction of bone turnover markers compared to medical therapy.
