Predictability of HOMA-IR for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Early Pregnancy Based on Different First Trimester BMI Values

Yanbei Duo et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the ability of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in early pregnancy for predicting gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Chinese women with different first-trimester body mass index (FT-BMI) values. The results show that increased HOMA-IR in early pregnancy is a risk factor for GDM, and HOMA-IR can be affected by body weight. The cutoff value of HOMA-IR to predict GDM should be distinguished by different FT-BMI values.

Is there any association between early trimester Triglyceride-glucose index and incidence of hypertensive disorder of pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes?

Yali Pan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index) and the incidence of hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP) and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The results showed a significant association between the TyG index and the incidence of HDP as well as the occurrence of low birth weight and fetal distress.

Maternal Preconception Body Mass Index Overtakes Age as a Risk Factor for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Maria Mirabelli et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the impact of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), with a focus on preconception BMI and age. Understanding these factors could inform prevention and intervention strategies in areas with high prevalence of GDM. Importance rating: 8/10.

A Clinical Update on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Arianne Sweeting et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to abnormal glucose tolerance that occurs during pregnancy and is associated with higher infant birthweight, as well as future maternal and offspring cardiometabolic disease. The prevalence of GDM is increasing globally due to factors such as rising obesity rates in women of reproductive age and revised diagnostic criteria. Although there is a lack of international consensus on the diagnosis of GDM, it is important to recognize it as an early risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, considering its long-term complications for both mothers and offspring.

Insulin Resistance: From Mechanisms to Therapeutic Strategies

Shin-Hae Lee et al.

Summary: Insulin resistance, characterized by reduced responsiveness of insulin-targeting tissues to physiological levels of insulin, is a key pathogenic component of many metabolic diseases. This review summarizes the functions of insulin in glucose metabolism and discusses the mechanisms proposed for insulin resistance, such as ectopic lipid accumulation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and inflammation. Potential therapeutic strategies for addressing insulin resistance are also suggested.

Summary: This study identified five distinct trajectories of TyG index in normal-weight adults and found that these trajectories were differently associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. The high-stable pattern showed the highest risk of CVD.

Summary: This review summarizes the history of the use of the TyG index as a surrogate marker for insulin resistance (IR) and explores its application value in various types of cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as the potential limitations of using this index as a predictor for cardiovascular events. The aim is to provide more extensive and precise supporting evidence to improve its application value in CVD.

Triglyceride and glucose index and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: A nationwide population-based cohort study

Jung A. Kim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between pre-pregnancy TyG index and GDM in primipara women, finding that an increased TyG index was linked to a higher risk of GDM. The results suggest that elevation of the TyG index may serve as an early marker for GDM, with a more profound impact in individuals aged 35 years and older, with obesity, impaired fasting glucose, who are current smokers, or have a family history of diabetes mellitus.
