Toxic Metals in Liquid and Aerosol from Pod-Type Electronic Cigarettes

Naudia Gray et al.

Summary: High-quality and accurate data on metals in electronic nicotine delivery systems are crucial. The concentrations of chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, tin and lead were analyzed in liquid and aerosol from popular pod-based devices. The results showed significant variation in metal levels across different manufacturers, brands and packages.

Examining Metal Contents in Primary and Secondhand Aerosols Released by Electronic Cigarettes

Kashala Fabrice Kapiamba et al.

Summary: The health effects of electronic cigarette (EC) aerosol exposure are still not well understood due to insufficient data. In this study, metals in EC aerosols from three brands were quantified, and it was found that some metals exceeded the regulated maximum daily intake amount. The metals were mainly released from the EC liquid, and high metal contents were also observed in simulated secondhand aerosols.

Content of toxic components of cigarette, cigarette smoke vs cigarette butts: A comprehensive systematic review

Farshid Soleimani et al.

Summary: Commercially sold cigarettes contain over 7000 chemicals, producing various potential toxicants during combustion. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other aromatic hydrocarbons are major components, while metals and nitrosamines are found in higher concentrations in sidestream smoke. Tobacco toxicants are inhaled by smokers and transmitted to the environment through secondhand smoke, thirdhand smoke, and discarded cigarette butts.

Carcinogenic components of tobacco and tobacco smoke: A 2022 update

Yupeng Li et al.

Summary: Tobacco and tobacco smoke contain over 9500 chemical compounds, with 79 of them considered as carcinogens. Advances in analytical technology have provided new data on the levels of carcinogens in tobacco products. The number of compounds classified as carcinogens in tobacco has been increasing. Monitoring of carcinogen levels and regulatory actions are necessary to reduce the risk of cancer.

Critical Review of the Recent Literature on Organic Byproducts in E-Cigarette Aerosol Emissions

Sebastien Soulet et al.

Summary: Laboratory studies have shown that the production of potentially toxic organic byproducts in e-cigarette aerosol emissions is significantly lower than in tobacco smoke. However, most studies did not meet the consistency criterion with realistic usage conditions, leading to questionable reliability of experimental outcomes and risk assessments.

Non-Targeted Chemical Characterization of JUUL-Menthol-Flavored Aerosols Using Liquid and Gas Chromatography

Mark. R. R. Crosswhite et al.

Summary: This study characterized the aerosol constituents generated from JUUL Menthol pods and compared their chemical complexities to cigarette smoke. The results showed that JUUL aerosols have lower chemical complexity compared to cigarette smoke and contain unique chemical constituents not found in cigarette smoke.

Transfer of Metals to the Aerosol Generated by an Electronic Cigarette: Influence of Number of Puffs and Power

Brian Rastian et al.

Summary: Electronic cigarettes may expose users to toxic heavy metals, but the mechanism of metal transfer from the e-cigarette parts to the aerosol is not well understood. This study aimed to quantify the concentrations of heavy metals during the simulated use of an e-cigarette and better understand the transfer mechanism. The study found that the concentration of metals increased with the number of puffs, but varied for each element and depending on the power applied to the heating coil.

Mark R. Crosswhite et al.

Summary: The chemical constituents of JUUL Virginia Tobacco pods with different nicotine concentrations were characterized using non-targeted analyses, revealing reaction products and flavorants as the main components. The aerosols from VT3 and VT5 contained unique compounds not identified in cigarette smoke.
