Formation mechanism of the sealing capacity of the roof and floor strata of marine organic-rich shale and shale itself, and its influence on the characteristics of shale gas and organic matter pore development

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the development of sealing capacities of shale, roof, and floor strata and their impact on the composition of shale gas and the development of organic matter pores. The research reveals that roof and floor strata have vertical sealing effects on organic-rich shale, and the overburden pressure of shale increases with burial depth, leading to decreased permeability and increased self-sealing capacity.

Natural gas of radiolytic origin: An overlooked component of shale gas

Maria Naumenko-Dezes et al.

Summary: This article presents a study that reveals a previously overlooked source of natural gas in shale formations, which is generated by radiolysis of organic matter. The study shows that radiolytic gas can account for a significant portion of natural gas mixtures in major shale gas plays worldwide. Considering radiolytic gas as an additional component in uranium-bearing shale gas formations can lead to a more accurate determination of the origins of natural gas.

Geochemical Characteristics and Origin of Shale Gases From Sichuan Basin, China

Yunyan Ni et al.

Summary: This study analyzed gases from shale gas fields in the southern Sichuan Basin to investigate their geochemical characteristics and origins. The gases belonged to shale gas from the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian shale and were dominated by methane. The isotopic compositions of carbon indicated high thermal maturity and contributions from organic matter. The study found a complete carbon isotopic reversal trend and highlighted the importance of understanding the geochemical characteristics of shale gases for future exploration.

Shale gas geochemistry in the Sichuan Basin, China

Ziqi Feng et al.

Summary: This review systematically analyzes the geochemical characteristics of Silurian shale gas in the Sichuan Basin, including its special isotope anomalies. The dominant component of over-mature Longmaxi Formation shale gas is methane, with high CH4 and low C2+ contents. The geochemical anomalies mainly refer to abnormally enriched delta C-13(1) values and full reversal, resulting in deviations in carbon isotope composition and light hydrocarbon data. Understanding the geological processes that led to these anomalies provides valuable insights for studying late-stage gas generation.

Enrichment characteristics and exploration directions of deep shale gas of Ordovician-Silurian in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas, China

Nie Haikuan et al.

Summary: The study found that the reservoir characteristics and enrichment conditions of deep shale gas are complex and diverse, requiring deeper geological understanding and the use of technology suitable for geological features. The LM1-LM3 marine-continental transition zone is the most favorable production interval, and deepwater areas are the main areas for deep shale gas enrichment.

Haikuan Nie et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the geological characteristics of commercial and non-commercial zones in the Sichuan Basin, indicating that shale gas is mainly enriched in deep-water shelves, regional faults have a destructive effect on shale gas preservation, and black shale thickness controls shale gas field distribution.

Pore structure and heterogeneity of shale gas reservoirs and its effect on gas storage capacity in the Qiongzhusi Formation

Shangbin Chen et al.

Summary: The study of shale gas reservoir physical properties involves fine characterization of pore systems and heterogeneity. Research in the Qiongzhusi Formation about micro-control factors of low productivity remains controversial. The investigation on the influence of mineral compositions on reservoir physical properties and shale heterogeneity showed that pore structures in the shale were mainly wedge-shaped and V-shaped pores with significant heterogeneity, affecting shale gas migration and reservoir identification. Clay mineral content intensified compaction and pore destruction, while brittle minerals could protect pores, depending on their content, mechanical properties, and diagenesis. The poor gas storage capacity in the Qiongzhusi Formation was attributed to compression damage to pores, large microscopic roughness, surface fluctuations, and strong pore structure heterogeneity, resulting in lower productivity.
