On the crustal framework of the central Alto Paje? Terrane (Borborema Province, NE Brazil): Geophysical and structural data constrain late Neoproterozoic transpression in Western Gondwana

Armando Lucas S. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The structural framework of the Alto Pajeu Terrane in NE Brazil records the tectonic evolution related to the amalgamation of Western Gondwana. The regional crustal architecture is constrained by geophysical and litho-structural datasets in the Central Borborema Province. Various kinematic indicators consistently assign motion sense for different shear zones, highlighting the transpressional regime in the late stages of the Orogeny in the region. The microstructures reveal deformational conditions and similarities with tectonites along the southern Patos lineament.

Summary: This study uses enhanced aeromagnetic images to reveal internal details of the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian intracontinental Patos-Pernambuco shear system and estimate shear strains and displacements. The study confirms the sinistral nature of the shear zones in the Central Domain and suggests different deformation patterns in the Northern Domain.

Sedimentary geochemistry of Late Cretaceous-Paleocene deposits at the southwestern margin of the Anambra Basin (Nigeria): Implications for paleoenvironmental reconstructions

Erepamo J. Omietimi et al.

Summary: The Campano-Maastrichtian deposits of the Nkporo and Mamu formations in the Anambra Basin in southern Nigeria represent potential hydrocarbon resources. A detailed geochemical analysis and mineralogical characterization revealed that the region experienced a warm, humid tropical paleoclimate during the Late Cretaceous. The high precipitation during the Cretaceous resulted in intense chemical weathering. The studied mudrocks were primarily deposited in brackish to shallow-marine settings with poor primary productivity and under oxic conditions.

The previously missing c. 2.9 Ga high-K continental crust in West Gondwana revealed in Northeast Brazil

Alanielson C. D. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The discovery of previously unknown 2.97-2.92 Ga high-K calc-alkaline magmatism in the Borborema Province of northeast Brazil suggests a transition to high-K magmas occurred before c. 2.7 Ga in Earth's history. Despite multiple reworking events from the Archean to Proterozoic times, these rare remnants of K-rich magmatism indicate the significant role of reworking in the growth and differentiation of continental crust in West Gondwana from c. 2.9 Ga onwards.

Magnetotelluric evidence for a Rhyacian suture zone hidden underneath the Serido belt, Borborema Province, Northeastern Brazil

Antonio L. Padilha et al.

Summary: The Borborema Province in northeast Brazil is a complex orogenic system associated with late Neoproterozoic-early Phanerozoic continental tectonic movements. Magnetotelluric data shows the regional deep electrical resistivity structure dominated by 3-D effects, with a major crustal conductivity anomaly modeled under Neoproterozoic supracrustal rocks. This anomaly likely reflects remnants of a northwest-directed subduction zone with enhanced conductivity associated with interconnected magnetite along the suture/shear zone, influencing tectonomagmatic events in the region.

A review of the geochemical changes occurring during metamorphic devolatilization of metasedimentary rocks

Aleksandr S. Stepanov

Summary: The redistribution of elements by fluids produced by metamorphic devolatilization is a major process responsible for crustal differentiation. Geochemical changes caused by devolatilization vary in different metamorphic complexes, with some elements depleted in almost all complexes. This process has the potential to concentrate dispersed elements into ore-grade mineralization, particularly in the formation of orogenic gold deposits.

Neoproterozoic magmatic arc volcanism in the Borborema Province, NE Brazil: possible flare-ups and lulls and implications for western Gondwana assembly

Fabricio Andrade Caxito et al.

Summary: The new data on rhyolitic metavolcanic and metavolcaniclastic rocks in NE Brazil provide insights into widespread arc-related phenomena during the Neoproterozoic, with major magmatic activities occurring around 635-600 Ma. The rocks are mostly calc-alkaline, magnesian, and peraluminous, with specific geochemical signatures such as LREE enrichment.

Geochemistry and provenance of the metasedimentary rocks surrounding the Santa Quiteria magmatic arc, NE Brazil: Tectonic and paleogeographic implications for the assembly of West Gondwana

Luiza de Carvalho Mendes et al.

Summary: The Western Gondwana region was formed due to the closure of the Pharusian-Goianides Ocean, leading to the formation of magmatic arcs, high-pressure belts, and sedimentary basins. Rocks in this region were classified based on their geochemical characteristics and isotopic data, showing different origins and depositional environments. The Caninde Complex and Independencia Unit were deposited in basins associated with both active and passive margin settings, controlled by the Santa Quiteria Magmatic Arc.

A new record of continental arc magmatism in the Ceara Central Domain, Borborema Province (NE Brazil): evidence from the Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex

Joao Paulo A. Pitombeira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the arc magmatism in the western active margin of Gondwana by analyzing new U-Pb zircon ages, lithogeochemistry, whole-rock Nd, and in situ zircon Hf isotopes from the Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex in NE Brazil. The results suggest that the granitoids in the area were formed from a mixture of juvenile magmas and older crustal components. The geochronological and geochemical data indicate a synchronous evolution with the Santa Quiteria Magmatic Arc, pointing to a magmatic flare-up event between 660 and 620 Ma during the subduction of Goias-Pharusian oceanic crust in the central portion of West Gondwana.

Magmatic flare-up causes crustal thickening at the transition from subduction to continental collision

Carlos E. Ganade et al.

Summary: Research findings suggest that a magmatic flare-up event in the Kabye Massif, Togo, led to crustal thickening. This was caused by increased magma productivity and crustal thickening resulting from dehydration of serpentinized mantle during the subduction of the hyper-extended margin of an approaching continent.
