Effectiveness of an intervention to reduce sedentary behaviour as a personalised secondary prevention strategy for patients with coronary artery disease: main outcomes of the SIT LESS randomised clinical trial

B. M. A. van Bakel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of a sedentary behavior intervention for patients with coronary artery disease participating in cardiac rehabilitation. The results showed a reduction in sedentary time, but no significant difference compared to the control group. However, the proportion of patients with sedentary time above the upper limit of normal significantly decreased in the intervention group.

Association of device-measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour with cardiovascular risk factors, health-related quality-of-life and exercise capacity over 12-months in cardiac rehabilitation attendees with coronary heart disease

Nicole Freene et al.

Summary: This study examines the independent relationship of device-measured physical activity and sedentary behavior on risk factors, quality-of-life, and exercise capacity in cardiac rehabilitation attendees over 12 months. Results show that any intensity of physical activity is associated with decreased total cholesterol, increased light-intensity physical activity is associated with improved measures of adiposity, and breaking up sedentary behavior and increasing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity may decrease systolic blood pressure over time.

European Society of Cardiology: cardiovascular disease statistics 2021

Adam Timmis et al.

Summary: The report updates and expands upon the 2019 report, providing cardiovascular disease statistics for 57 ESC member countries. The burden of CVD is highest in middle-income countries, with lower life expectancy compared to high-income countries. Obesity and calcific aortic valve disease have shown significant increases. Disability-adjusted life years due to CVD are nearly four times higher in middle-income countries compared to high-income countries in most of the ESC member countries.

Sedentary behaviour in cardiovascular disease patients: Risk group identification and the impact of cardiac rehabilitation

Esmee A. Bakker et al.

Summary: The study compared sedentary behavior between cardiovascular disease patients and age-matched controls, finding that CVD patients had greater amounts of sedentary time. Sedentary behavior was associated with personal and lifestyle characteristics, as well as comorbidities. Participation in a contemporary cardiac rehabilitation program slightly reduced sedentary time, but tailored interventions are needed for targeting sedentary behavior in CVD patients.

Smartphone applications for physical activity and sedentary behaviour change in people with cardiovascular disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Kacie Patterson et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the effectiveness of smartphone applications in increasing physical activity in patients with cardiovascular disease. Through systematic review and meta-analysis, it was found that smartphone applications did have a positive impact on improving physical activity in patients. Although there were limitations in terms of bias and small sample sizes in some studies, the majority of the results supported the effectiveness of smartphone applications.

Evaluating mobile health technologies: does the traditional randomized controlled trial serve our needs?

Robyn Gallagher et al.

Summary: Mobile health technologies are increasingly used by cardiovascular nurses and allied health clinicians to support behavior change and self-care in patients. Rigorous evaluation through randomized controlled trials can be slow, leading to outdated technology upon completion. A helpful modification to trial design involves identifying behavior intervention principles and tracking in-app usage data concurrently for more efficient evaluation.

Guidelines for Reporting Trial Protocols and Completed Trials Modified Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Other Extenuating Circumstances The CONSERVE 2021 Statement

Aaron M. Orkin et al.

Summary: The CONSERVE guideline, developed as a joint extension for CONSORT and SPIRIT reporting guidelines, aims to improve the reporting of trial protocols and completed trials that undergo important modifications in response to extenuating circumstances. The guideline was developed through an accelerated, iterative process involving multiple rounds of meetings, surveys, and feedback from trial stakeholders globally. Professionals from 34 countries participated in the survey, with high levels of understanding and acceptance of the core concepts and implementation tool of the guideline.
