Heterostructured materials

Yuntian Zhu et al.

Summary: Heterostructured materials are a new class of materials composed of heterogeneous zones with dramatically different properties. They exhibit superior mechanical or physical properties that surpass their conventional homogenous counterparts. This review focuses on the structural heterostructured materials, which achieve their superior mechanical properties through hetero-deformation induced strengthening and work hardening. The unique deformation behavior of these materials, along with their wide application potential, is driving the rapid development of the field.

Simultaneously enhancing strength and ductility of HCP titanium via multi-modal grain induced extra dislocation hardening

Lei Gu et al.

Summary: According to Conside`re necking criterion, increasing the strength of a material will decrease its ductility, even if the strain hardening rate remains the same. Traditional strengthening mechanisms such as grain refinement and deformation reduce ductility while increasing yield strength. Heterostructures have shown potential in reducing ductility loss but still have lower ductility compared to coarse-grained counterparts. In this study, a bulk heterostructured Ti with a uniform multi-modal grain size distribution was fabricated and exhibited high yield strength, ductility, and an outstanding hardening effect. The improvement in ductility was attributed to the presence of maximum interface density and extra strain hardening caused by hetero-deformation induced dislocation pile-ups.

High strength and high ductility achieved in a heterogeneous lamella-structured magnesium alloy

Tong Wang et al.

Summary: This research has achieved excellent strength-ductility synergy in magnesium alloys by introducing a heterogeneous lamella structure. Strengthening and enhanced ductility were achieved through the non-uniform distribution of hetero-deformation induced stress, grain-boundary disclinations, and intergranular slip transfers. This provides a new approach to address the strength-ductility trade-off dilemma in magnesium alloys.

Overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off in metastable dual-phase heterogeneous structures using variable temperature rolling and annealing

Jun Hu et al.

Summary: A novel variable temperature rolling (VTR) and annealing process was applied to a metastable austenitic stainless steel. The result shows that strain softening occurred during both cold rolled and cryogenic rolled-annealed steels, leading to low uniform elongations of only 2-3%. On the contrary, the VTR process achieved a metastable dual-phase heterogeneous lamellar structure, resulting in an ultra-high strength of over 1 GPa and a remarkable increase of uniform elongation up to 10% due to strain hardening. The high strength and ductility are attributed to the significant work-hardening derived from the superior heterogeneous deformation-induced hardening and sustained transformation-induced plasticity effect.

Superior strength-ductility synergy in three-dimensional heterogeneous-nanostructured metals

Guodong Li et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous microstructural design is an effective strategy to break the strength-ductility dilemma in nanostructured metals, but precise control remains challenging. In this work, we demonstrate a novel powder metallurgy approach to create three-dimensional core-shell nanostructures with highly tunable shell thickness and grain size distributions. These 3D nanostructures enable superior strength-ductility synergy in pure copper, pushing the boundary of the Ashby map to uncharted territory. Our study provides a viable approach for designing bulk nanostructured materials with 3D heterogeneous ingredients and demonstrates a promising pathway for the development of strong and ductile materials.

Evading the strength and ductility trade-off dilemma in titanium matrix composites through designing bimodal grains and micro-nano reinforcements

Jiajing Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel heterogeneously optimized titanium matrix composite (TMC) with fine grain/coarse grain regions and various reinforcements was designed. The TMCs achieved a simultaneous improvement in strength and ductility by nearly 30% compared to the matrix alloy. The bimodal structures and reinforcements played a significant role in strengthening and toughening, while different dislocation behaviors contributed to the desirable ductility. These findings emphasize the untapped potential for enhancing the mechanical properties of metal matrix composites.

Designing structures with combined gradients of grain size and precipitation in high entropy alloys for simultaneous improvement of strength and ductility

Shuang Qin et al.

Summary: Suppressing early strain localization at the nanostructured topmost layer is crucial for better tensile ductility in gradient structures. By introducing combined gradients in both grain size and volume fraction of precipitates, the alloy exhibits improved yield strength and uniform elongation. Higher strain gradients and more geometrically necessary dislocations at various domain boundaries contribute to stronger hetero-deformation-induced extra hardening. The observed higher yield strength is attributed to mechanisms of dislocation strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and HDI strengthening.

Summary: The effect of hot rolling on laminated metal matrix composites was investigated. It was found that after rolling, the layer thickness and matrix grain size decreased significantly, and the tensile strength and deformation ability improved. Increasing rolling reduction resulted in a decrease in deformation ability while the strength remained almost unchanged. Additionally, increasing rolling reduction caused interface decohesion and crack formation.

Deformation mechanism of bimodal microstructure in Ti-6Al-4V alloy: The effects of intercritical annealing temperature and constituent hardness

Yan Chong et al.

Summary: This study systematically modified the volume fractions of primary alpha grains in Ti-6Al-4V alloy bimodal microstructures to investigate their tensile properties at different intercritical annealing temperatures. The results indicated that in the low temperature region, where the hardness of alpha(p) was significantly higher than that of beta(trans), the bimodal microstructures exhibited remarkable strengthening effects. Conversely, in the high temperature region where the hardness of beta(trans) and alpha(p) were comparable, the bimodal microstructures experienced a significant decrease in uniform elongation due to the absence of clear strain partitioning and strain gradient across the interfaces.
