Octupole-driven magnetoresistance in an antiferromagnetic tunnel junction

Xianzhe Chen et al.

Summary: The tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) is usually studied in ferromagnetic materials, but this study reports the observation of TMR in an all-antiferromagnetic tunnel junction. A TMR ratio of about 2% was measured at room temperature, which is attributed to the configuration of cluster magnetic octupoles in the chiral antiferromagnetic state. Sign and direction of anisotropic longitudinal spin-polarized current in the antiferromagnet can be controlled by octupole direction. Theoretical analysis suggests that the chiral antiferromagnetic MTJ can produce a substantially large TMR ratio due to the time-reversal, symmetry-breaking polarization characteristic of cluster magnetic octupoles.

Room-temperature magnetoresistance in an all-antiferromagnetic tunnel junction

Peixin Qin et al.

Summary: Antiferromagnetic spintronics is a growing field with potential applications in high-density and ultrafast information devices. We describe an exchange-bias effect between collinear antiferromagnet MnPt and non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Pt at room temperature, which enables the construction of all-antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions with large nonvolatile magnetoresistance. Atomistic spin dynamics simulations reveal the origin of this effect at the interface of MnPt, while first-principles calculations explain the high magnetoresistance from the spin polarization of Mn3Pt in momentum space. These all-antiferromagnetic tunnel junction devices with minimal stray fields and enhanced spin dynamics could be important for future memory devices.

Effect of residual strain on magnetic properties and Hall effect in chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn

J. J. Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of residual strain (RS) generated by uniaxial stress on the magnetic properties and Hall effect of polycrystalline Mn3Sn was investigated. The results suggest that RS is beneficial for suppressing the magnetic transition from an inverse triangular antiferromagnetic (AFM) state to a helical AFM state. Furthermore, the topological Hall effect (THE) was observed in Mn3Sn over the entire temperature range from 5 K to 400 K due to RS. It is speculated that the THE originates from a RS-induced non-coplanar AFM structure. These findings provide a path for the construction of topological antiferromagnets through strain engineering.

Unconventional Robust Spin-Transfer Torque in Noncollinear Antiferromagnetic Junctions

Srikrishna Ghosh et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically studies the junctions built out of noncollinear antiferromagnets in spintronics applications. It demonstrates large and robust magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque for ultrafast switching between parallel and antiparallel states of the junctions. In addition, a new type of self-generated torque appears in the noncollinear junctions.

Tunneling Magnetoresistance in Noncollinear Antiferromagnetic Tunnel Junctions

Jianting Dong et al.

Summary: Antiferromagnetic spintronics is a subfield of spintronics that takes advantage of antiferromagnets producing no stray fields and exhibiting ultrafast magnetization dynamics. This study demonstrates the potential of utilizing noncollinear antiferromagnetic metals to achieve high tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect, which can be used to detect the Néel vector and produce multiple nonvolatile resistance states.

Perpendicular full switching of chiral antiferromagnetic order by current

Tomoya Higo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the perpendicular and full spin-orbit torque switching of an antiferromagnetic binary state. The researchers use the chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn and fabricate heavy-metal/Mn3Sn heterostructures by molecular beam epitaxy. The experimental results show that the perpendicular octupole polarization in a 30-nanometre-thick Mn3Sn film can achieve 100% switching with a critical current density of less than 15 megaamperes per square centimetre. The study reveals the significance of the perpendicular geometry between the current-induced spin accumulation and the octupole polarization for spin-orbit torque efficiency.

M. Ikhlast et al.

Summary: Piezomagnetism is a linear coupling between strain and magnetic order, enabling the control of magnetization. This study reports the observation of large piezomagnetism at room temperature in an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal, which allows strain to control the anomalous Hall effect. This finding has the potential for spintronics applications.

Tuning the transport properties of Mn3Ge through the effect of strain on its magnetism

Sayak Dasgupta

Summary: This study investigates the effect of strain on the strong anomalous Hall response in the kagome lattice antiferromagnet Mn3Ge. It reveals that both intraplanar and interplanar strains can switch the sign of the Hall response at a constant magnetic field. Furthermore, strain can effectively manipulate the spin-wave band gaps, providing a way to tune the magnon responses in this system.

Thickness dependent anomalous Hall effect in noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn3Sn polycrystalline thin films

Yongcheng Deng et al.

Summary: Research shows that even thin Mn3Sn films as thin as 20 nm exhibit a significant anomalous Hall effect, which varies depending on the relative crystalline structure of different thickness samples. Additionally, a phase diagram of the AHE in Mn3Sn films annealed at different temperatures with different thicknesses was obtained, and current-induced antiferromagnetic state switching was achieved in Mn3Sn (20 nm) / Pt (4 nm) samples. These findings could potentially advance the development of antiferromagnetic spintronics.
