Refractive Index and Temperature Sensing System With High Sensitivity and Large Measurement Range Using an Optical Fiber

Zhigang Gao et al.

Summary: We propose a temperature and refractive index sensing probe based on a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a silver film coating. We suggest a simple method for coating silver films on the periphery of the PCF, solving previous difficulties. The sensing probe achieves dual-parameter sensing of refractive index and temperature using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the temperature-sensitive material. The experimental results demonstrate wide measurement range and high sensitivity of the sensing probe.

Analysis of single-channel SPR-SMS refractive index and temperature sensor

Pedro Vitor Taranto de Carvalho et al.

Summary: A novel method for dual-sensing using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) optical fiber sensors and singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) interferometer sensors was developed in this study. The integration of SPR theory and MMI theory allowed for the simulation of an SPR-SMS sensor capable of sensing two parameters using a single channel. The proposed sensor structure consisted of a tapered SMS with a gold layer replacing the multimode fiber cladding for SPR excitation. The optimized SMS structure compensated for cross-sensitivity and enabled the sensing of temperature and refractive index using a single channel.

Simulations of surface plasmon resonance sensor based on v-shaped microstructured optical fiber for temperature and refractive index sensing

Wandi Zhang et al.

Summary: A v-shaped MOF-based SPR sensor is proposed for simultaneous measurement of temperature and RI. The v-shaped structure simplifies the sensor fabrication by conveniently coating it with a gold layer. The simulation results show that the v-shaped structure can support two polarized resonance peaks with different response characteristics for temperature and RI changes, with temperature coefficients of 11.8 and 6.2pm/degrees C for x- and y-polarized peaks, and RI coefficients of 1408 and 1505nm/RIU for x- and y-polarized peaks, respectively.

Cross-sensitivity immune SPR sensor based on fan-shaped microstructured optical fiber for temperature and refractive index sensing

Wandi Zhang et al.

Summary: In order to solve the problems of coating, fiber hole filling, phase-matching, and cross-sensitivity, a surface plasmon resonance sensor based on a fan-shaped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is proposed for simultaneous temperature and refractive index (RI) sensing. The fan-shaped structure is fabricated by polishing two sides of MOF with an angle of 120°. The sensor has two independent sensing sides, one coated with a gold film and polydimethylsiloxane layer for temperature sensing, and the other coated with only a gold film for RI sensing. By monitoring the shifts of the resonance peaks, the temperature sensitivity is found to be 2.932 nm/°C in the range of 30°C to 40°C, and the RI sensitivity is 4235 nm/RIU in the range of 1.38 to 1.39.

Orthogonal-Sided Polished Microstructured Optical Fiber-Based SPR Sensor for Simultaneous Measurement of Temperature and Refractive Index

Nannan Luan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a concept of orthogonal-side polished microstructured optical fiber (MOF)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor to simultaneously sense two parameters. The theoretical investigation of two feasible structures, L-shaped MOF-based and rectangular MOF-based SPR sensors, shows that these sensors can support resonance peaks of different polarizations for measuring and separating variations of temperature and refractive index. The proposed sensors exhibit good temperature and refractive index coefficients, which can be further improved by selecting appropriate structure parameters.

Side-Opening Grapefruit Fiber-Based SPR Sensor for Simultaneous Measurement of Refractive Index and Temperature

Xianxing Ji et al.

Summary: A novel side-opening grapefruit fiber-based SPR sensor is designed for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature. The variations of RI and temperature lead to the shifts of two resonance peaks, which can be used to determine the variations of RI and temperature. The simulation results show different sensitivities of Peak I and Peak II to the changes of RI and temperature.

Dual-parameter sensor for simultaneously measuring refractive index and temperature based on no-core fiber and SPR effect

Zhiyong Yin et al.

Summary: In this study, a dual-parameter sensor based on a no-core fiber and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is proposed, which can simultaneously measure temperature and refractive index. The sensor utilizes metallic silver to excite the SPR effect and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a temperature-sensitive material. Numerical results show that both temperature and refractive index can be accurately reflected in the same spectrum without interference. The sensor has a simple structure and offers the advantage of dual-parameter measurement, making it highly suitable for applications in biochemical detection, environmental monitoring, and medical sensing.
