Self-evolving photonic crystals for ultrafast photonics

Takuya Inoue et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrate ultrafast pulse generation using a self-evolving photonic crystal that transitions from high loss to low loss state through dynamic dispersion compensation. They experimentally generate short pulses with a high peak power of 80W and pulse width of <30ps in a 1mm-diameter GaAs-based photonic crystal. The self-evolving carrier-photon dynamics greatly expand the potential of nanophotonic materials and offer various scientific and industrial applications.

Photonic crystals with rainbow colors by centrifugation-assisted assembly of colloidal lignin nanoparticles

Jinrong Liu et al.

Summary: Photonic crystals with rainbow structural colors have been successfully fabricated through centrifugation-assisted assembly of lignin nanoparticles. The centrifugation process serves to classify the nanoparticles and produce monodispersed layers, resulting in gradient colors. The dynamic rearrangement of the lignin nanoparticles during assembly into semi-closed structures is crucial for the formation of photonic crystals.

Utilizing photonic band gap in triangular silicon carbide structures for efficient quantum nanophotonic hardware

Pranta Saha et al.

Summary: Silicon carbide is considered a leading material platform for quantum information due to its long spin coherence and single-photon emitting properties. Efficient collection of color center emission is crucial for applications in quantum networking, computing, and sensing. However, there is limited understanding regarding light propagation in the triangular structures formed by angle-etching processes. In this study, we explore the formation of photonic band gap in triangular structures and propose applications such as TE-pass filters, TM-pass filters, and highly reflective photonic crystal mirrors for efficient light collection and mode selection.

Samad Roshan Entezar et al.

Summary: In this paper, novel tunable photonic bandgap structures were proposed using slabs of GaAs and layers containing InAs/InGaAs quantum dots. The optical features of the structures were characterized using the transfer matrix method and the excitonic susceptibility was defined to include all broadenings. The structures showed tunability with changes in crystal temperature, incident angle, and external pump laser, demonstrating potential for all-optical switches.

Communication wavelength investigation of bound states in the continuum of one-dimensional two-material periodic ring optical waveguide network

Yan Zhi et al.

Summary: In this study, a one-dimensional two-material period ring optical waveguide network (TMPROWN) was designed and its optical properties were investigated. Key characteristics observed in the 1D TMPROWN include the generation of bound states in continuum (BICs) and their larger and continuous range compared to previous optical structures. The physical mechanisms of the generated BICs in the 1D TMPROWN were analyzed. The simplicity of its structure, flexibility in adjusting frequency band of BICs, and ease of measuring electromagnetic wave properties make the 1D TMPROWN promising for various optical applications.

Recent advances in photonic crystal optical devices: A review

M. A. Butt et al.

Summary: Phonic crystals were proposed in 1987 for manipulating light propagation through periodic and random refractive index variations. Recent developments include small radius bent waveguides, miniaturized resonator cavities, and Y-branches based on PhCs, which can lead to the development of dense integrated circuits. Further investigation is needed into this new PhC technology.

Ultrawide Photonic Bandgap and Ultrastrong Photonic Localization Produced by Series of Periodic Networks

Xiaohui Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that with an increasing fractal generation, the number of equivalent triangular loops in the network exponentially increases, leading to a rapid enlargement of the gap-midgap ratio of PBG, approaching a limit of 200% for networks with an integer waveguide length ratio of 1:2. For networks with a non-integer waveguide length ratio of 1:2 +/- Delta d, the gap-midgap ratio of PBG varies with increasing Delta d.

A Self-Defocusing Effect in Series of Networks for Nano All-Optical Switching

Xiaohui Xu et al.

Summary: A theoretical design of all-optical switches based on series of networks is proposed, showing exponential increase in switching efficiency with the increment of fractal generation and loop density. By using nonlinear material with negative nonlinear refractive index and defective waveguide length, the switching efficiency can be greatly improved and the threshold energy reduced. Additionally, the switching efficiency monotonously increases, while the threshold energy decreases rapidly with increasing fractal generation.

Novel Photonic Bio-Chip Sensor Based on Strained Graphene Sheets for Blood Cell Sorting

Fatemeh Ghasemi et al.

Summary: A photonic biochip with tunable response in the visible range was proposed for blood cell sorting, utilizing multi-layered ZnS and Ge slabs as the core components. By encapsulating the bio-cell in air slabs and coating its walls with graphene sheets, the sensitivity of the chip was enhanced. The detectivity of the sensor was explored by adjusting the probe light incident angle and polarization, as well as introducing strain and angle in the graphene layer to improve performance tunability. Results showed the biochip could effectively identify selected components through different optical features induced, with varying figure of merit and sensitivity recorded for each component by the sensor.

Summary: A one-dimensional complete-connected network is designed to investigate its extraordinary optical property for producing an ultrawide photonic band gap. Analytical formulas are derived for the gap-midgap ratio of the largest PBGs created by CCNs and the general transmission formula for 1D CCNs. This network has wide applications in designing optical filters, devices with large PBGs, and optical communication devices.
