Effect of boron nitride overlayers on Co@BNNSs/BN-Catalyzed aqueous phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Rong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study obtained experimental evidence on the significant impact of BN shells on hydrogenation by controlling the thickness of the BN overlayers on Co@BN/BN model catalysts. The findings showed that ultra-thin BN shells provided more migrating sites and effectively shortened the hydrogen spillover distance, thereby enhancing the activity of the catalyst. These observations provide new insights into the confined effect on the catalysis process through the precise regulation of BN shell properties.

Prediction of new 2D Hf2Br2N2 monolayer as a promising candidate for photovoltaic applications

Ali Obies Muhsen Almayyali et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural and optoelectronic properties of pristine and strained hexagonal Hf2Br2N2 monolayer were investigated using first-principles calculations. The monolayer was found to have dynamic and thermal stabilities. The unstrained Hf2Br2N2 monolayer is a semiconducting material with an indirect bandgap, and biaxial strain can effectively adjust the energy gap. The results suggest potential applications of the Hf2Br2N2 monolayer in photodetectors and photovoltaics.

BC2N nanotube as a promising anode for rechargeable calcium ion batteries

Nasma A. Jaber et al.

Summary: Due to cost-effective production and abundant calcium resources, Ca-ion batteries (CIBs) are a viable alternative to Li-ion batteries (LIBs). BC2N nanotubes have been studied as promising anode materials for high-performance CIBs. Through first-principles computations, BC2N nanotubes have been found to exhibit good electrochemical attributes, cycling stability, and adsorption behavior, with a high specific capacity of 840 mAh/g and a predicted average open-circuit voltage of 1.56 V. These findings suggest that BC2N nanotubes can be used as suitable anode materials for CIBs.

Self-assembly synthesis of phosphorus-doped tubular g-C3N4/Ti3C2 MXene Schottky junction for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Kelei Huang et al.

Summary: Delaminated 2D Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets were used to decorate P-doped tubular g-C3N4, forming a 1D/2D Schottky heterojunction. The optimized composite showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution compared to pristine g-C3N4 and PTCN. The enhancement was attributed to the phosphorus doping, unique structure of the heterojunction, and the separation and inhibition of charge carriers. Metallic Ti3C2 acted as an electron sink and photon collector, while the ultrathin Ti3C2 flake served as a co-catalyst for higher reactivity.

First-principle investigation of silicon carbide nanosheets fluorination: Stability trends, electronic, optical and magnetic properties

Juliana A. Goncalves et al.

Summary: In this study, first-principles calculations were used to investigate the fluorination of silicon carbide nanosheets. It was found that the Si atoms serve as energetically favorable adsorption sites for F atoms in all cases studied. The relative position of the adsorbed F atoms is determined by the strain caused by the fourfold coordinated Si atoms in the flat SiC nanosheet, with nearest-neighbor Si sites being occupied if the F atoms bind sheet's opposing sides and being away from each other if they are on the same side of the sheet. The electronic and magnetic properties of the fluorinated nanosheets are weakly dependent on the side of the sheet the F atoms bind, but strongly dependent on the relative distance between them.

The mechanism of semiconductor to metal transition in the hydrogenation of VO2: a density functional theory study

Jian Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, the hydrogenation of VO2 was investigated by modulating hydrogen content and monitoring interaction models. It was found that the monoclinic VO2(020) surface showed distinct electronic polarization, and the interaction strength between hydrogen and oxygen decreased with increasing hydrogen atom layers. The energy gap on the surface of VO2 decreased gradually with increasing hydrogen content, eventually transitioning from a semiconductor to a metallic conductor.

Tunable Electronic Properties of Novel 2D Janus MSiGeN4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) Monolayers by Strain and External Electric Field

Vo T T Vi et al.

Summary: In this paper, the structural, elastic, and electronic properties of novel two-dimensional Janus MSiGeN4 monolayers (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) are studied using first-principles calculations. The phonon spectra calculations indicate that these monolayers are dynamically stable and can be experimentally synthesized. The obtained results show that these Janus monolayers have larger Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, meeting the mechanical stability criteria. Moreover, they exhibit indirect semiconductor characteristics with larger band gaps than similar materials, and the biaxial strain has a significant influence on the electronic characteristics.

Impact of fluorination on the energy level alignment of an FnZnPc/MAPbI3 interface

Elham Oleiki et al.

Summary: We have investigated the interface interactions between a Methylammonium Lead Iodide (MAPbI(3)) surface and zinc-phthalocyanine molecules with F substituting peripheral H (FnZnPc; n = 4, 8, 12, and 16) using density functional theory (DFT) based simulations. Our results show that FnZnPc molecules form a stable interface with MAPbI(3), and fluorination leads to an increase in ionization potential/electron affinity and interfacial charge transfer. Contrary to common belief, our study reveals that hole transfer is facilitated while electron transfer is suppressed in the case of excessive fluorination due to intermolecular interactions and substrate-to-molecule electron transfer at the heterojunction.
