Gut microbiota-derived metabolites mediate the neuroprotective effect of melatonin in cognitive impairment induced by sleep deprivation

Xintong Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that gut microbes and their metabolites mediate the ameliorative effects of melatonin on sleep deprivation-induced cognitive impairment. The results indicate that melatonin alleviates the inflammatory response and neuronal apoptosis in the hippocampus by regulating the levels of Aeromonas and LPS in the gut, and increasing the levels of Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136 and butyrate, through crosstalk between the TLR4/NF-κB and MCT1/HDAC3 signaling pathways.

Beneficial effect of the short-chain fatty acid propionate on vascular calcification through intestinal microbiota remodelling

Jianlong Yan et al.

Summary: This study found that propionate can improve vascular calcification by regulating the intestinal microbiota. The results of the observational cohort study showed that the levels of propionate in both blood and faecal samples were negatively correlated with vascular calcification. Animal experiments confirmed that propionate supplementation can reshape the intestinal microbiota, increase SCFA production, improve intestinal barrier function, alleviate inflammation, and ultimately ameliorate vascular calcification.

The interplay between mast cells, pineal gland, and circadian rhythm: Links between histamine, melatonin, and inflammatory mediators

Linh Pham et al.

Summary: The daily rhythmicity in our body is controlled by a circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus. Mast cells play a protective role against pathogens and inflammation and are associated with the circadian rhythm. Melatonin and histamine modulate circadian rhythms by regulating NF-kappa B, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for MC-mediated inflammatory diseases.

Melatonin induces Nrf2-HO-1 reprogramming and corrections in hepatic core clock oscillations in Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Apeksha Joshi et al.

Summary: Melatonin treatment improved oscillatory patterns of clock genes and antioxidant genes in conditions of high-fat high fructose diet and/or jet lag-mediated NAFLD, leading to improvements in lipid metabolism, liver function, and histomorphology of fatty liver. The reprogramming of hepatic core clock and Nrf2-HO-1 genes by melatonin contributed to the overall improvement in HFHF/JL-induced NAFLD.

Prebiotic Inulin and Sodium Butyrate Attenuate Obesity-Induced Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction by Induction of Antimicrobial Peptides

Julia Beisner et al.

Summary: This study showed that supplementation with inulin or sodium butyrate improved diet-induced liver steatosis in obese mice, reduced weight gain, liver weight, plasma and hepatic triglyceride levels. The supplementation also induced expression of Paneth cell antimicrobials, contributing to improved intestinal barrier function.
