Individual Characteristics That Promote or Prevent Psychological Safety and Error Reporting in Healthcare: A Systematic Review

Summary: This systematic review investigates the individual characteristics that influence speaking up and error reporting behaviors in healthcare organizations. The findings suggest that self-confidence and positive perceptions of self, the organization, and leadership are important factors that promote speaking up and error reporting, while self-preservation associated with fear and negative perceptions act as barriers. The results highlight the importance of understanding individual perceptions and promoting psychological safety to enhance error reporting.

Just culture in healthcare: An integrative review

Summary: Despite two decades of the patient safety movement in the United States, healthcare safety remains a significant problem. The lack of empirical literature related to Just Culture in healthcare indicates a need for further examination and application of this concept. The review identified four main themes: Error Management, Balance, Leadership and Staff, and Systems Leadership for Change, providing direction for future research and quality improvement efforts in promoting the adoption of Just Culture and enhancing patient safety.
