Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation: the second round of challenges

Fernando Meyer et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of the second round of the Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation challenges (CAMI II), which is a community-driven effort for comprehensively benchmarking tools for metagenomics data analysis. The results show substantial improvements in assembly, but related strains and assembly quality still pose challenges. Taxon profilers and binners excel at higher bacterial ranks but underperform for viruses and Archaea. The need to improve reproducibility is emphasized by the clinical pathogen detection results.

The nasal viromes of cattle on arrival at western Canadian feedlots and their relationship to development of bovine respiratory disease

Maodong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used Nanopore-based viral metagenomic sequencing to explore the nasal virome of cattle upon arrival at feedlot and found a diverse array of viruses present. Results demonstrated no clear relationship between the viruses detected at arrival and the development of BRD.

Prevalence and Risk Factors Associated With Antimicrobial Resistance in Bacteria Related to Bovine Respiratory Disease-A Broad Cross-Sectional Study of Beef Cattle at Entry Into Canadian Feedlots

Sara Andres-Lasheras et al.

Summary: A study of beef cattle at Canadian feedlots found that dairy-type cattle were more likely to carry antibiotic-resistant bacteria compared to beef-type cattle. Data collected included factors such as cattle type, source, and risk of developing BRD, with results showing that cattle from backgrounding operations had a higher likelihood of carrying antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
