Summary: This paragraph discusses the status, opportunities, challenges, and limitations of machine learning applied to X-ray and neutron scattering techniques, focusing on surface scattering. Typical strategies and potential pitfalls are outlined. The applications to reflectometry and grazing-incidence scattering are critically discussed. Comment is also given on the availability of training and test data for machine learning applications, such as neural networks, and a large reflectivity data set is provided as reference data for the community.

Summary: Autonomous experimentation is an emerging paradigm that aims to automate the entire experiment workflow, including the decision-making step. By exploiting Gaussian process modeling and objective function, recent progress has been made in the application of this concept at synchrotron x-ray scattering beamlines. The automation of measurement instrument, data analysis, and decision-making, coupled with in situ processing platforms, facilitates efficient exploration of physical spaces and discovery of new materials.

Summary: The Complex System and Biomedical Sciences (CBS) group at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble specializes in studying various materials and systems, including soft and hard condensed matter, nanomaterials, and biological materials. They use scattering techniques such as X-ray diffraction and reflectivity to explore the structure and dynamics of different systems. With the recent upgrade of the ESRF storage ring, the facility has become the world's first high-energy synchrotron of the 4th generation, offering new experimental opportunities for nanoscale research. This contribution discusses the impact of the upgrade on selected beamlines in the CBS group and presents recent scientific activities after the facility reopening.

Summary: Neutron scattering experiments are essential for studying materials properties. In this study, the authors introduce a probabilistic active learning approach for neutron spectroscopy using three-axes spectrometers, optimizing the use of beam time by focusing on informative regions of the signal. By utilizing log-Gaussian processes, this method not only operates autonomously but also provides precise locations for informative measurements, enhancing the efficiency of the experiments.

Summary: Machine learning is a valuable tool in materials characterization, allowing for automated interpretation of experimental results and on-the-fly decision making to improve measurement effectiveness. By combining an ML algorithm with a physical diffractometer, we developed an autonomous and adaptive XRD method that leverages early experimental information to enhance the identification of crystalline phases. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of ML-driven XRD in detecting trace materials and identifying short-lived intermediate phases, showcasing the advantages of in-line ML for materials characterization and indicating the potential for adaptive experimentation.

Summary: The application of machine learning techniques to X-ray scattering experiments has gained significant attention recently, especially in the study of complex oxides. However, the application of these techniques in soft materials is limited due to the nonequilibrium nature of soft materials phase spaces and the complexities associated with autonomous formulation preparation. In this study, the Autonomous Formulation Laboratory was designed as a robust platform for automated synthesis and measurement of complex liquid mixtures using X-ray and neutron scattering, with potential for system-specific complementary techniques like spectroscopy and rheometry. The platform was successfully applied to generate dense and highly reproducible data sets on various material systems, from silica nanoparticles to block copolymer micelles. It is expected that this platform will revolutionize the understanding of complex liquid formulations stability and provide a foundation for the development of machine learning techniques for soft materials phase spaces.

Summary: The study investigated the structural and morphological characteristics of Alq(3) thin films deposited at different rates using XRR and GISAXS. Slowing down the deposition rate increased the electron density, reduced defects and porosity, and decreased the diffusion depth of Co in Alq(3). This suggests that controlling the growth rate of Alq(3) can improve the performance of organic spin valve devices.
