Friction and wear properties of TiAlN coated tools with different levels of surface integrity

Kaishuo Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of surface integrity on the high-speed sliding wear and cutting performance of coated tools. The results show that low surface roughness effectively reduces the friction coefficient, while high surface hardness and compressive residual stress minimize fluctuations in the friction coefficient. The cutting performance of coated tools is primarily influenced by surface hardness and residual stress.

Finite element simulation and experimental validation of machining martensitic stainless steel using multi-layered coated carbide tools for industry-relevant outcomes

Priya Ranjan et al.

Summary: The machinability of martensitic stainless steel is challenging due to poor thermal conductivity, leading to high tool wear. Coating application on cutting tools is a sustainable technique to improve machinability. Finite element modeling is an important tool in evaluating machining performance of coated tools.

TiN versus TiSiN coatings in indentation, scratch and wear setting

Rumana Akhter et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance of binary TiN and ternary TiSiN coatings under different loading conditions, finding that TiSiN coatings have higher hardness values and scratch resistance due to their nanocomposite structure and higher residual compressive stress. The damage resistance of both coatings is mainly influenced by the sliding or shearing effects, with TiSiN coatings showing better scratch adhesion properties. Lower wear rates for TiSiN coatings during dry sliding were found to be consistent with their higher mechanical properties.

Influence of NbC additions on microstructure and wear resistance of Ti(C, N)-based cermets bonded by CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy

Qingshan Gou et al.

Summary: By incorporating NbC into Ti(C,N)-based cermets bonded by CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy, the mechanical properties, cutting performance, and high-temperature wear resistance were enhanced. The addition of 3 wt% NbC resulted in improved relative density, hardness, and fracture toughness of the cermets. Additionally, the presence of stable lubricant tribolayers contributed to the superior high-temperature wear resistance of the cermet inserts.
