Progress in applications of shockwave induced by short pulsed laser on surface processing

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: The force effect of the shockwave generated by laser can improve the mechanical properties, microstructure, shape, and surface cleanliness of materials. It is widely used in surface strengthening, surface cleaning, and metal forming. Laser shock peening (LSP) and laser shock cleaning (LSC) are two applications of laser shockwave in surface processing. The force effect of laser shockwave allows non-thermal treatment and has been used in aerospace, biomedical, and semiconductor industries.

Investigation on heat transfer and ablation mechanism of CFRP by different laser scanning directions

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is widely used in aviation, medical, and motorbike industries due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Nanosecond pulsed laser is an efficient method for machining microchannels and holes in CFRP plates. A numerical model considering heterogeneity and anisotropy of nanosecond laser processing CFRP was established, and comparison of simulation and experiments under different scanning directions showed a deviation of microchannel width ranging from 5.01% to 16.99%.

Study on anisotropic heat transfer and thermal damage in nanosecond pulsed laser processing of CFRP

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Nanosecond pulsed laser processing is an efficient method for carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) manufacturing in aviation, medical, and auto industries. Anisotropic heat transfer of carbon fiber is a critical factor degrading the surface integrity during laser processing of CFRP. A novel numerical model considering anisotropic heat transfer was established to analyze heat transfer and thermal damage. The simulation and experiments show that the model accurately simulates the CFRP laser machining, and the laser scanning direction and parameters have significant effects on the depth and width of laser ablation.

Comparative Analysis of Bubbles Behavior in Different Liquids by Laser-Induced Plasma Micromachining Single-Crystal Silicon

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative investigation on bubble behavior and its effect on the surface integrity of microchannels in laser-induced plasma micromachining (LIPMM). The study explores the formation mechanism of microbubbles and conducts experiments using three types of liquids at different depths. The results reveal that the number and maximum diameter of attached bubbles vary among the liquids, and the behavior of microbubbles differs in high-viscosity phosphoric acid solution.

Comparative investigations on machinability and surface integrity of CFRP plate by picosecond laser vs laser induced plasma micro-drilling

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is widely used due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, drilling micro-holes in CFRP can be difficult due to its anisotropy and inhomogeneity. Traditional methods result in poor performance, while laser machining shows great potential in drilling CFRP micro-holes without tool wear and fiber pull-out, but faces challenges of large taper and recast layer. This study proposes laser induced plasma micro-drilling (LIPMD) to reduce taper and improve surface integrity. Analysis shows that LIPMD has advantages over laser in air (LIA) in terms of sidewall surface quality, taper, roundness, and surface integrity. The investigation demonstrates the applicability of LIPMD as a potential process for improving machinability and surface integrity of CFRP material.

Wenyuan Li et al.

Summary: An interlaced scanning mode (ISM) is proposed to improve the surface quality of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) plate by reducing heat accumulation effect and surface defects compared to the default sequential scanning mode (SSM). Several experiments show that ISM can significantly reduce the overall average HAZ width and taper of the hole, leading to less damage in the HAZ and vicinity.

A critical review of the drilling of CFRP composites: Burr formation, characterisation and challenges

Daniel Istvan Poor et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent key papers on burr formation, measurement, and evaluation in CFRPs in an attempt to standardize and classify burr characterization related expertise. It is found that while burrs usually do not weaken the strength of composite materials, it is still recommended to remove them, especially since the deburring process often leads to significantly increased operation time and cost.
