High human papillomavirus (HPV)-35 prevalence among South African women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia warrants attention

Zizipho Z. A. Mbulawa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and distribution of HPV genotypes in cervical lesions of unvaccinated women referred to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital. HPV-16 was found to be the most common genotype, while HPV-35 had a high prevalence among women with CIN3, which warrants attention.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) prevalence upon HPV vaccination in Swedish youth: a review based on our findings 2008-2018, and perspectives on cancer prevention

Juan Du et al.

Summary: The study found that HPV vaccination in Sweden led to a decrease in cervical HPV prevalence and oral HPV prevalence in youth, with Gardasil HPV types decreasing. However, it is important to continue monitoring remaining high-risk HPV types and cancer development.

Incidence, persistence and clearance of cervical human papillomavirus among women in Guangdong, China 2007-2018: A retrospective cohort study

Meijuan Li et al.

Summary: In women in Guangdong, HPV52, 58, 68, and 39 are more likely to cause infection and be persistent. Incidence and persistence rates of HPV are higher in younger and older women compared to middle-aged women. The period of HPV retesting may impact the detection of HPV incidence, persistence and clearance.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Histological outcomes in HPV-screened elderly women in Denmark

Gry St-Martin et al.

Summary: This study showed that offering a one-time HPV screening to Danish women born before 1948 can lead to the detection and treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades 2 and 3, potentially preventing cervical cancer. The management strategies varied among regions, affecting the proportion of women undergoing biopsy/conization. Further follow-up is needed to assess the long-term impact on cancer incidence in the screened population.

Prevalence, characteristics, and distribution of HPV genotypes in women from Zhejiang Province, 2016-2020

Xiaotian Yan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence and characteristics of HPV genotypes in female populations in Zhejiang Province, revealing a high infection rate with predominant genotypes such as HPV 52, 58, and others. The highest infection rate was found in individuals <= 20 years old, with a season-specific pattern in spring and winter. HPV 16, 18, 56, 58, and 66 were identified as independent risk factors for cervical lesions.

Age-related distribution of uncommon HPV genotypes in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3

Luca Giannella et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the age-related distribution of HPV genotypes affecting the risk-assessment in cervical cancer screening programs, showing that non-screening-type-HPV and non-HPV-16/18 genotypes have an impact on CIN3 lesions and their prevalence varies with age.
