Contributions of competition on Larix kaempferi tree-ring growth were higher than long-term climate in China

Chunyan Wu et al.

Summary: Forest tree growth is crucial for carbon cycle and sequestration in forest ecosystems, but the factors influencing tree growth are diverse. This study examined the impact of regional competition on tree growth in Chinese plantations through sampling tree-ring width of Larix kaempferi and competition data. The results revealed that competition consistently had a stronger effect on tree growth compared to climate or tree size. Over time, the negative effects of neighborhood competition gradually intensified, particularly exacerbated by drought conditions. Climate factors moderated the competitive effects during stand development, especially the negative effects of drought index on trees.

Estimating the distribution and productivity characters of Larix kaempferi in response to climate change

Chunyan Wu et al.

Summary: Understanding the distribution, net primary productivity (NPP) and environmental constraints of Larix kaempferi is crucial in predicting how global climate change will impact its growth and future dynamics. The study simulated future changes in suitable distribution patterns and NPP dynamics under different scenarios, showing that suitable areas for Larix kaempferi are likely to decrease and shift northward in response to climate change, with the potential for adaptation or movement to higher latitudes/altitudes. Key parameters affecting NPP include optimal growth temperature, forest age, and productivity loss during frost periods, with the potential for a significant increase in NPP under more optimistic climate scenarios.

Radial growth of Larix sibirica was more sensitive to climate at low than high altitudes in the Altai Mountains, China

Peng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study collected radial growth data from 13 Siberian larch plots in the Altai Mountains, China, and found that the effects of climatic factors on radial growth vary between low- and high-altitude groups.

Linking tree growth and intra-annual density fluctuations to climate in suppressed and dominant Pinus sylvestris L. trees in the forest-steppe of Southern Siberia

Alberto Arzac et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the climate response of Pinus sylvestris L. trees in two sites with different water availability in southern Siberia, showing that suppressed trees are more sensitive to climate change. Late spring to early summer were the main climate drivers, with suppressed trees showing a stronger and longer climate response.
