RSEIFE: A new remote sensing ecological index for simulating the land surface eco-environment

Ziwei Wang et al.

Summary: With the advancement of remote sensing technology, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) has been widely used for evaluating eco-environmental quality. However, the limitations of RSEI, such as lack of uniform application, stochastic results, and inability to consider all ecological elements, have led to the proposal of a new index named RSEIFE. Comparisons with other evaluation models have shown that RSEIFE has a more stable calculation process, consistent results with the real eco-environment, and the ability to reveal more details about its features. Moreover, RSEIFE effectively demonstrates the ecological benefits of both water bodies and their surrounding environments, providing a more accurate and comprehensive basis for environmental protection policies.

Spatiotemporal changes of eco-environmental quality based on remote sensing-based ecological index in the Hotan Oasis, Xinjiang

Yao Kaixuan et al.

Summary: The spatiotemporal changes in ecological environment of the Hotan Oasis in Xinjiang, China were analyzed using remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) and land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) data. The results showed a slight upward trend in RSEI, indicating improved eco-environmental quality. However, the distribution of RSEI became more fragmented over time. The changes were driven by anthropogenic factors, such as the expansion of artificial oasis, replacement of desert ecosystems by farmland ecosystems, and increase in impervious surfaces. The improved RSEI proved to be an effective tool for monitoring eco-environmental quality in arid areas.

Impact assessment modeling of climatic conditions on spatial-temporal changes in surface biophysical properties driven by urban physical expansion using satellite images

Saman Nadizadeh Shorabeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of climatic conditions on changes in surface biophysical properties driven by urban growth using remote sensing and climatic data. The results indicate that the effect of urban physical expansion on surface biophysical properties is more prominent in metropolises with humid climates. Long-term spatial and temporal analysis can aid decision-makers in planning for the reduction and control of land surface temperature changes based on the dominant climatic conditions of different metropolises.

Impact of surface characteristics and their adjacency effects on urban land surface temperature in different seasonal conditions and latitudes

Mohammad Karimi Firozjaei et al.

Summary: Urban land surface temperature (ULST) is an important variable in environmental applications and is influenced by surface characteristics and their adjacency effects. The impact of these factors varies in different seasonal conditions and latitudes. The study found that in the warm season, surface biophysical and topographical characteristics had a larger impact on ULST, while in the cold season the impact was smaller. With increasing latitude, the influence of surface biophysical characteristics on ULST increased, while the influence of topographical characteristics decreased. Considering the adjacency effects of surface characteristics can improve ULST modeling accuracy.

Detecting Spatial-Temporal Changes of Urban Environment Quality by Remote Sensing-Based Ecological Indices: A Case Study in Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, China

Yunfeng Shan et al.

Summary: Panzhihua City, a typical resource-based city in China, has been facing ecological and environmental challenges due to excessive development. This study evaluates the ecological environmental quality (EEQ) of Panzhihua using remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) and reveals the spatial-temporal changes of EEQ and the impact of mining activities. The results show overall improvement in EEQ, but regional differences exist and mining activities significantly decrease EEQ.

Understanding seasonal contributions of urban morphology to thermal environment based on boosted regression tree approach

Dongrui Han et al.

Summary: Urban morphology significantly affects the urban thermal environment, and there are scale effects in the seasonal impacts of 2D and 3D urban morphology. Using the boosted regression tree model, the study investigates the contributions of urban morphology to the thermal environment in Beijing. The results show that building density and building height have the greatest influence, while sky view factor, floor area ratio, and frontal area index have relatively low impacts. These findings have scientific implications for urban planners in mitigating the urban heat island effects through optimizing buildings.

Changes in ecosystem service values strongly influenced by human activities in contrasting agro-ecological environments

Mulatu Liyew Berihun et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of human activity driven land-use/land-cover changes on ecosystem service values over a period of 1982-2016/17 in different agro-ecological environments in the Upper Blue Nile basin of Ethiopia. Results showed that the expansion of cultivated land at the expense of natural vegetation severely reduced ecosystem service values, with the major contributor being the reduction in natural forest area.

Spatiotemporal change and driving factors of the Eco-Environment quality in the Yangtze River Basin from 2001 to 2019

Xinyue Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the overall ecological quality of the Yangtze River Basin has improved, with stable areas predominantly and some regions showing improvement or decline. Different ecological protection policies are necessary for enhancing the stability of the ecosystem, especially in regions like the Hengduan Mountains where ecological quality has declined despite the overall positive trend in the basin.

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The ecological environment quality in the Grand Canal area shows significant spatial and temporal differences, with the northern section being particularly unique and having lower quality compared to the central and southern sections. From 2000 to 2019, the ecological environment in the Grand Canal area experienced a decline, followed by an upward trend until stabilizing in 2019, with key factors in the improvement being increased vegetation coverage, enhanced environmental quality, and the implementation of national governance policies.

Land Surface Ecological Status Composition Index (LSESCI): A novel remote sensing-based technique for modeling land surface ecological status

Mohammad Karimi Firozjaei et al.

Summary: Accurate modeling of Land Surface Ecological Status (LSES) is crucial in environmental applications. A new index (LSESCI) was developed using remote sensing images to distinguish LSES of different Land Use/Covers (LULCs) particularly bare soils from lands affected by Anthropogenic Destructive Activities (ADAs). The efficiency and accuracy of LSESCI in modeling LSES were found to be superior to Remote Sensing-based Ecological Index (RSEI), showing potential for distinguishing LSES of urban and non-urban regions with heterogeneous surfaces.
