Environmental Justice and the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Urban Air Pollution Monitoring

Tatyana G. Krupnova et al.

Summary: The main objectives of urban air pollution monitoring are to optimize the relationship between humans and nature, integrate environmental databases, and develop sustainable approaches to urban environments. AI and ML can be utilized to build air pollution models and predict pollutant concentrations. Data integration and management are crucial for the successful application of computational intelligence approaches in ecology. However, the challenge lies in the environmental injustice context.

Combined Effect of High-Resolution Land Cover and Grid Resolution on Surface NO2 Concentrations

Carlos Silveira et al.

Summary: In this study, high-resolution simulations of nitrogen dioxide concentrations in Portugal were performed to analyze spatial variability. The results showed that high grid resolution can better characterize urban/local-scale pollution patterns, but has little impact on model performance.

Long-term exposure to black carbon and mortality: A 28-year follow-up of the GAZEL cohort

Jun Yang et al.

Summary: The study on a large population-based French cohort found a significant association between long-term exposure to black carbon (BC) and mortality, with higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The impact of BC was more significant among never-smokers and individuals with lower fruit/vegetable intake.

Satellite Remote Sensing for Estimating PM2.5 and Its Components

Ying Li et al.

Summary: PM2.5 satellite remote sensing is a powerful method for acquiring distribution and variation of PM2.5 on a large scale. Two-step methods, including AOD-PM2.5 models, have been widely used for estimating PM2.5. High-resolution PM2.5 products from current research have been applied in air pollution management, health impact assessments, numerical data assimilation, and climate impact analyses.

UAV-Based Remote Sensing Applications for Bridge Condition Assessment

Sainab Feroz et al.

Summary: The application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in bridge monitoring, in conjunction with remote sensing technologies, has been gaining momentum in recent years due to enhanced accessibility, cost efficiency, deterrence of traffic closure, and improved safety during inspection. This study conducted a comprehensive review of the integration of UAVs with remote sensing technologies, analyzing data acquisition methods such as visual imagery, infrared thermography, LiDAR, and other sensors. Sixty-five journal and conference papers published in the last two decades on NDT-based UAV systems were scrutinized, comparing stand-alone and integrated NDT-UAV methods, and discussing the facilitation of bridge inspection using UAVs in terms of ease of use, accuracy, cost-efficiency, data collection tools, and simulation platforms. Challenges and future perspectives of UAV-NDT technologies were also highlighted.

Constructing Shapes and Mixing Structures of Black Carbon Particles With Applications to Optical Calculations

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Black carbon aerosols strongly absorb solar radiation, affecting regional and global climate. The optical absorption of BC is still controversial due to difficulties in quantifying complex morphology. The study introduces a novel tool to construct realistic BC shape models for optical calculations, highlighting the importance of morphology and mixing structures on BC's optical properties.

Mobile monitoring and spatial prediction of black carbon in Cairo, Egypt

Hoda Talaat et al.

Summary: This study developed a spatial model for predicting black carbon concentrations in the Greater Cairo Region in Egypt using mobile data and compared the accuracy of different models. The neural network model showed higher accuracy in estimating BC concentrations compared to the land use regression model.

Updated Global Black Carbon Emissions from 1960 to 2017: Improvements, Trends, and Drivers

Haoran Xu et al.

Summary: Researchers updated the estimation of black carbon emissions using new data, revealing a 32% increase compared to previous estimates, primarily due to field-measured emission factors for residential stoves and differentiated factors for vehicles. Additionally, the updated emissions show an inverse U-shaped trend, driven by factors such as population growth, per capita energy consumption, and vehicle fleet increase.
