A resilience-based recovery scheme for smart grid restoration following cyberattacks to substations

Abolfazl Rahiminejad et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an innovative recovery framework for Smart Grids (SGs) after cyberattacks, based on a novel metric that captures the resilience posture of SGs. By considering both Power-side Resilience (PsR) and Cyber-side Resilience (CsR), the framework aims to enhance the overall system resilience through the right decisions. The proposed approach is evaluated on test systems and compared with existing works, showing a 22% improvement in system resilience.

Resilience assessment and enhancement evaluation of power distribution systems subjected to ice storms

Guangyang Hou et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a probabilistic framework for assessing and evaluating the enhancements of the ice storm resilience of power distribution systems, with a focus on fragility modeling of power distribution components. The framework is able to assess the impact of ice storms on the resilience of power distribution systems and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of resilience enhancement strategies. The proposed framework is demonstrated with a power distribution network in Oklahoma.

Seismic failure risk analysis of ± 800 kV coupling filter circuit considering material strength deviation

Wang Zhu et al.

Summary: A 3D finite element model was used to perform dynamic calculations to analyze the seismic failure risk of an 800 kV filter circuit. Using three different probabilistic approaches based on fitting log-normal distributions, the seismic fragility of the circuit was calculated. The impact of material strength deviation on seismic fragility and failure risk was also investigated.

Post-earthquake recover strategy for substations based on seismic resilience evaluation

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a rapid seismic resilience assessment framework that combines a network model and functional time-varying feature. The authors developed a dual-dimensional functional network model of a typical 220 kV substation and evaluated its rapid function status based on its network dependence on Bayesian network nodes. They also focused on resource constraint and power user importance in their post-earthquake iterative analysis. The article provides a seismic resilience analysis of the electrical substation and a multi-objective heuristic optimization algorithm to determine an optimal post-earthquake multi-level repair strategy.

Seismic resilience evaluation and retrofitting strategy for substation system

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a seismic resilience evaluation framework for electrical substation systems, combining seismic simulation and function recovery, to find efficient retrofitting strategies. A directed acyclic graph is built based on the structural connectivity and redundancy of substation seismic behavior. A structural and electrical dual-function network model is established using the Simulink module, and divided into four analytical steps for hierarchical simulation. Post-earthquake iterative analysis and sequential repair sequence are conducted for functional recovery. A set of seismic analytical methods is developed to quantify the retrofitting efficiency of equipment.

Probability-based seismic resilience assessment method for substation systems

Jichao Li et al.

Summary: A new probability-based method is proposed to assess the seismic resilience of complex systems such as substations. A case study conducted on a typical 220 kV substation in China showed that the system's resilience index with a functionality prioritisation recovery strategy is two to three times higher than that of a pre-determined one at the maximum considered earthquake.

Summary: This study presents a flow-based analysis model integrating the flow block diagram and state tree method to evaluate the earthquake-resistance capability of a complex multi-input-multi-output system substation. The developed directed graph logic system analysis model provides reliability indicators associated with the overall system. A case study on a practical substation demonstrates the potential of the analysis results in assisting decision-makers in seismic optimization.

A full time scale resilience improvement strategy of distribution network under extreme weather

Yixin Ding et al.

Summary: A framework for enhancing the resilience of power distribution systems to natural disasters caused by extreme weather is proposed. The framework analyzes the impact of extreme weather events on power system components and evaluates the failure probability of the components. The vulnerability model of the components is established and a multi-stage performance response curve is used to quantify the resilience level of the network. Based on this, a framework for disaster resilience enhancement before, during, and after disasters is proposed.

Post-earthquake resilience assessment and long-term restoration prioritization of transportation network

Yangyang Wu et al.

Summary: Efficient and safe transportation systems are crucial to communities during the long-term recovery period after earthquakes. This study introduces a new methodology for assessing the resilience performance of transportation networks during post-earthquake recovery, integrating traffic efficiency and safety into the assessment and prioritization of recovery. By modeling the traffic performance of partially closed road segments and introducing a resilience indicator, this approach aims to support more risk-informed post-hazard recovery planning.

Summary: This study proposes a seismic retrofit system for large power transformers with 3000 kVA capacity, enhancing seismic performance by limiting lateral and vertical deflection during earthquakes. Experimental and numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the retrofit system in reducing deflection and acceleration of the transformer during severe ground motions.
