Understanding the role of the gut microbiome in gastrointestinal cancer: A review

Duygu Agagunduz et al.

Summary: Gastrointestinal cancer is a common type of cancer, influenced by genetic and multifactorial factors including microorganisms and the gut microbiome. Studies have shown the role of certain microorganisms and their metabolites in promoting or inhibiting tumorigenesis. Recent research has also highlighted the potential of dysregulation of non-coding RNA expression through the gut microbiome in causing gastrointestinal cancer. This review aims to summarize the latest findings on the relationship between the gut microbiome, ncRNAs, and gastrointestinal cancer, as well as discuss their potential applications in diagnosis and treatment.

Effectiveness of the pomegranate extract in improving hepatokines and serum biomarkers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A randomized double blind clinical trial

Sima Jafarirad et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pomegranate extract on liver enzymes, hepatokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and total antioxidant capacity in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results showed that pomegranate extract significantly reduced the levels of ALT, AST, GGT, fetuin-A, FGF-21, and IL-6, while increasing the total antioxidant capacity. However, no significant effect was observed on ALP. Therefore, pomegranate extract may serve as an effective adjunctive therapy for NAFLD.

The roles of dietary lipids and lipidomics in gut-brain axis in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Duygu Agagunduz et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by dysfunctional pancreatic beta-cells and insulin resistance, and it is influenced by genetic, metabolic, lifestyle, and sociodemographic factors. The disease is also affected by dietary lipids, lipid metabolism, and gut microbiota. Lipidomics analysis has shown potential in understanding the pathogenesis and progression of T2DM. Understanding the interactions between dietary lipids, lipidomics, and gut microbiota can lead to new strategies for the prevention and treatment of T2DM.

Polyphenols inhibiting MAPK signalling pathway mediated oxidative stress and inflammation in depression

Tapan Behl et al.

Summary: Depression is characterized by increased inflammation and oxidative stress. Natural polyphenols play a vital role in regulating cell signaling pathways related to oxidative stress and inflammation, demonstrating their potential in preventing and treating depressive disorder. Understanding the mechanism of polyphenols in cell signaling pathways is essential for developing novel compounds for depression treatment.

Does pomegranate consumption improve oxidative stress? A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials

Elnaz Lorzadeh et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of pomegranate consumption on oxidative stress biomarkers. The results showed that pomegranate consumption can effectively improve certain oxidative stress factors, including total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase levels, while reducing malondialdehyde levels. However, further well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to validate these findings.
