Implications of Post-recanalization Perfusion Deficit After Acute Ischemic Stroke: a Scoping Review of Clinical and Preclinical Imaging Studies

Noa van der Knaap et al.

Summary: The goal of reperfusion therapy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is to restore cerebral blood flow through recanalization of the occluded vessel. However, successful recanalization does not always result in favorable clinical outcome. Post-recanalization perfusion deficits (PRPDs), constituted by cerebral hypo- or hyperperfusion, may contribute to lagging patient recovery rates, but its clinical significance remains unclear.

Regression shrinkage and selection via least quantile shrinkage and selection operator

Alireza Daneshvar et al.

Summary: In recent years, the state-of-the-art lasso and adaptive lasso techniques have gained significant attention. The adaptive lasso, unlike the traditional lasso, assigns adaptive weights to penalize coefficients in a different manner. However, the initial coefficient values less than one can lead to large weights and increased bias. To overcome this issue, a new weighted lasso method called 'lqsso' is proposed. The lqsso method takes into account both the signs and magnitudes of the initial coefficients to determine appropriate weights. Simulation studies demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methodology, particularly in high-dimensional settings, and an efficient algorithm for computation is provided. The application of the lqsso method is further illustrated using a real-world problem based on the rat eye dataset.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning overview in pathology & laboratory medicine: A general review of data preprocessing and basic supervised concepts

Samer Albahra et al.

Summary: Machine learning is increasingly applied in various medical domains, but many pathologists and laboratory professionals lack familiarity with these tools and are not prepared for their integration. To address this knowledge gap, this article provides an overview of key elements in machine learning, covering concepts, data preprocessing methods, study design, and commonly used supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms. The aim is to offer a comprehensive reference for newcomers and those in need of a refresher, with a focus on pathology and laboratory medicine.

Thrombectomy in special populations: report of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery Standards and Guidelines Committee

Fawaz Al-Mufti et al.

Summary: Mechanical thrombectomy can be effective for treating ELVO in ischemic stroke in special populations such as those over 80, under 18, with thrombocytopenia, pregnant, or with endocarditis. While outcomes may not be as favorable as in younger or normal platelet count patients, there is still potential benefit, especially in the elderly. Limited data is available for patients with collagen vascular diseases, but in carefully selected cases, MT may still be appropriate.

Global Trends in Mortality and Burden of Stroke Attributable to Lead Exposure From 1990 to 2019

Tongchao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the global spatiotemporal patterns of lead exposure-related stroke burden and found that lead exposure is an important risk factor for stroke. The highest stroke mortality and DALYs attributable to lead exposure were observed in males, the elderly population, low and middle-income countries, and the intracerebral hemorrhage subtype. From 1990 to 2019, there was a decreasing trend in stroke mortality and DALYs attributable to lead exposure, especially in females, high-income countries, and the subarachnoid hemorrhage subtype.

Summary: This study aimed to construct a dynamic web-based nomogram for predicting the risk of malignant brain edema (MBE) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients after endovascular thrombectomy (ET). The nomogram showed good discrimination ability and calibration. Our nomogram outperformed the previous risk models in predicting brain edema after ET.

Comparison of Risk Factors, Safety, and Efficacy Outcomes of Mechanical Thrombectomy in Posterior vs. Anterior Circulation Large Vessel Occlusion

Joshua Mbroh et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that there are differences in the treatment process and prognosis between posterior circulation large vessel occlusion (PCLVO) and anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (ACLVO) strokes. While PCLVO patients exhibit variations in certain factors, their success in achieving recanalization and favorable functional outcomes is comparable to ACLVO patients, with a lower rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and higher mortality for PCLVO.
