Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE): criteria for neuropathological diagnosis and relationship to repetitive head impacts

Ann C. McKee et al.

Summary: There has been a significant increase in scientific research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the past 17 years. CTE has been diagnosed in hundreds of contact sport athletes and others through postmortem examination, and there is a strong causal relationship between repetitive head impacts (RHI) and CTE. The neuropathological features of CTE are unique, and the NINDS-NIBIB criteria have greatly advanced the diagnosis of CTE.

Rethinking recovery in adolescent concussions: Network-level functional connectivity alterations associated with motor deficits

Jewel E. Crasta et al.

Summary: Adolescents who have clinically recovered from concussion still exhibit subtle motor impairment, and there is limited information about the relationship between persistent motor impairment and brain-behavior. In this study, we examined this relationship and found that recovered adolescents showed greater motor deficits and increased connectivity between the default mode network (DMN) and left lateral premotor cortex compared to controls. Additionally, connectivity between DMN and left lateral premotor cortex was correlated with total motor deficit scores, suggesting that altered functional connectivity may contribute to motor deficits in recovered adolescents. Further research is needed to understand the long-term clinical significance and persistence of altered functional connectivity and associated motor deficits.

The effects of sports-related concussion history on female adolescent brain activity and connectivity for bilateral lower extremity knee motor control

Taylor M. Zuleger et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate brain activity and connectivity in female adolescent athletes with a history of sports-related concussions (SRCs) during a lower extremity motor control task. The results showed that athletes with a history of SRC exhibited decreased neural activity in the left inferior parietal lobule/supramarginal gyrus (IPL) compared to uninjured controls during the bilateral leg press. Additionally, connectivity analysis revealed different patterns of neural connectivity in athletes with a history of SRC compared to controls. These findings suggest that SRCs may have long-term effects on neuromuscular control and can lead to compensatory neural mechanisms.

Altered connectivity of default mode and executive control networks among female patients with persistent post-concussion symptoms

Jimmy K. Y. Wong et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the roles of the default mode network (DMN) and executive control network (ECN) in prolonged recovery after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), as well as their relationships with indices of white matter microstructural injury. The results showed that patients with mTBI had increased functional connectivity of the DMN and ECN to brain regions implicated in salience and frontoparietal networks, as well as increased white matter diffusivity within the cerebrum and brainstem. These findings suggest that hyper-connectivity may represent a compensatory response in female mTBI patients with prolonged symptoms.

The Mammillary Bodies: A Review of Causes of Injury in Infants and Children

K. M. E. Meys et al.

Summary: Despite their small size, mammillary bodies play a crucial role in supporting recollective memory. However, their significance is often overlooked in assessing memory-related neurological disorders, especially in infants and children. This literature review indicates that mammillary body pathology is present in pediatric populations with various conditions, as shown by signal change and atrophy on brain MR imaging. The main causes of pathology are thiamine deficiency, hypoxia-ischemia, direct damage, or deafferentation within the Papez circuit. Given their importance in memory processes, it is critical to optimize scanning protocols and include assessment of mammillary body status as a standard procedure.

Beyond body maps: Information content of specific body parts is distributed across the somatosensory homunculus

Dollyane Muret et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the information content in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is more distributed than the selectivity of body parts suggests. Using fMRI analysis, the researchers found significant differences in body part representation not only within the primary region but also in distant non-primary regions. This finding has implications for rehabilitation and brain-machine interfaces.

Threat Detection in Nearby Space Mobilizes Human Ventral Premotor Cortex, Intraparietal Sulcus, and Amygdala

Aline W. de Borst et al.

Summary: Research on the monkey brain has shown that the precentral gyrus and ventral intraparietal area form a system for detecting and responding to events in surrounding space, particularly threats. A study on humans found that the ventral premotor cortex and intraparietal sulcus in the human brain respond more strongly to approaching threatening stimuli, with the amygdala and anterior insula also involved in threat processing.

Multimodal magnetic resonance imaging of youth sport-related concussion reveals acute changes in the cerebellum, basal ganglia, and corpus callosum that resolve with recovery

Najratun Nayem Pinky et al.

Summary: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide various measurements related to sport-related concussion (SRC) symptoms. In this study, researchers used multimodal MRI and a symptom-guided region-of-interest (ROI) approach to study youth with SRC. They found different MRI changes in the cerebellum, basal ganglia, and white matter tracts in SRC patients compared to controls, which were associated with symptom severity and time since injury. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the physiological mechanisms of concussion and localization of brain injury.

Summary: This study investigates the alterations in resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) brain connectivity in patients with postconcussion vestibular dysfunction (PCVD) and their correlations with symptoms provoked during Vestibular/Ocular-Motor Screening (VOMS) assessment. The findings suggest that increased connectivity of visual input, multisensory processing, and spatial memory in PCVD patients correlates with clinical symptom severity, indicating maladaptive brain plasticity underlying vestibular symptomatology.

Summary: Visceral pain, a complex experience commonly seen in patients with inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, involves aberrant neural processing within the gut-brain axis.
