Fiber connectivity density mapping in end-stage renal disease patients: a preliminary study

Chi Ma et al.

Summary: Abnormal brain structural connectivity is associated with cognitive impairment in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This study investigated the characteristics of cortical structural connectivity in ESRD patients. The results showed that ESRD patients exhibited extensive impaired cortical structural connectivity, which was related to the severity of white matter hyperintensity (WMH). Furthermore, serum creatinine, urea, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels may be risk factors for brain structural network decompensation in ESRD patients.

The pattern of brain metabolism in chronic steno-occlusive cerebral artery disease

Lingyan Meng et al.

Summary: Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is useful for non-invasively studying metabolic changes in patients with chronic cerebral artery steno-occlusive disease. The concentrations of NAA, NAA/Cr, Cho, and Cho/Cr may be used as indicators for evaluating neuronal damage and treatment effectiveness.

Hemodynamic impairments within individual watershed areas in asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis by multimodal MRI

Stephan Kaczmarz et al.

Summary: Improved understanding of complex hemodynamic impairments in asymptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis is crucial for better stroke risk assessment. MRI-based perfusion and oxygenation parameters offer deeper perspectives on microvascular impairments, with most pronounced changes detected within individual watershed areas.

A comparison of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) for mild cognitive impairment screening in Chinese middle-aged and older population: a cross-sectional study

Xiaofang Jia et al.

Summary: MoCA is a better measure of cognitive function due to the lack of ceiling effect and good detection of cognitive heterogeneity. The prevalence of MCI is higher when using MoCA compared to MMSE. Both tools identify modifiable factors for MCI concordantly, providing important evidence for establishing intervention measures.

Surface-based Cortical Morphometry, White Matter Hyperintensity, and Multidomain Cognitive Performance in Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis

Lei Gao et al.

Summary: Carotid stenosis, even when clinically asymptomatic, is associated with cognitive decline and neuroimaging changes. Patients with severe asymptomatic carotid stenosis exhibit thinner cortex, shallower sulci, abnormal gyrification, and lower complexity in specific brain regions, which are significantly correlated with verbal memory and WMH burden. These findings suggest a neuroanatomical predisposition to dementia and cerebrovascular events in patients with severe asymptomatic carotid stenosis.

Altered functional connectivity is related to impaired cognition in left unilateral asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis patients

Shihao He et al.

Summary: This study revealed significant declines in short-term memory and lower brain network connectivity in asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis (aCAS) patients compared to controls, with the decreased connectivity significantly correlated with memory impairment. The findings suggest that alterations in network connectivity may be an essential mechanism underlying cognitive decline in aCAS patients.

The relationship between depressive symptoms and activity of daily living disability among the elderly: results from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS)

Z. Feng et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between depressive symptoms and activity of daily living disability among the elderly in China, finding a higher ADL score among elderly with depressive symptoms. Prevention or reduction of ADL disability may have a positive effect on medical care of elderly with depressive symptoms.

Measurement of Cortical Atrophy and Its Correlation to Memory Impairment in Patients With Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis Based on VBM-DARTEL

Peijiong Wang et al.

Summary: Patients with asymptomatic severe carotid artery stenosis (CAS) experience memory impairment, with extensive atrophy seen in bilateral anterior circulation regions. The hemisphere affected by stenosis shows more severe atrophy. Memory impairment in patients may be associated with atrophy in the left frontal gyrus, and different regions of atrophy may lead to different types of memory impairments.
