Off-Hour Admission Is Associated with Poor Outcome in Patients with Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Muhammad Junaid Akram et al.

Summary: This study examined how off-hour admissions affect the outcomes of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of ICH patients admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between January 2017 and December 2019. Off-hour admission was found to be significantly associated with a poor functional outcome at 3 months, even after adjusting for other factors. Patients admitted during off-hours had a higher risk of poor functional outcomes compared to those admitted during working hours.

Estimated Burden of Stroke in China in 2020

Wen-Jun Tu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, incidence, and mortality rate of stroke in China in 2020 using a nationally representative sample. The results showed that the overall burden of stroke in mainland China was 2.6%, with higher prevalence in urban areas and higher incidence and mortality rates in rural areas. These findings highlight the need for an improved stroke prevention strategy in China.

Effect of Admission and Discharge Times on Hospital Mortality in Patients With Sepsis

Xiaoming Zhou et al.

Summary: A retrospective study found that the time of admission/discharge from the ICU and weekend admission are not independently associated with hospital mortality in critically ill septic patients. The patient to nurse ratio at admission is significantly correlated with hospital survival. The stability of patients upon transfer from the ICU is the main risk factor for in-hospital death.

Urban-rural lifespan disparities and cause-deleted analysis: evidence from China

Mengxue Chen et al.

Summary: The study examines the length and dispersion level of lifespan for subnational populations in China, focusing on the urban-rural gap and sex differences. It analyzes the contribution made by causes of death and finds that the urban-rural gaps are shrinking while the gender gaps remain large. The study also reveals that causes of death with different age distribution patterns contribute differently to the level and direction of the urban-rural and sex differentials in life expectancy and lifespan disparity.

City Size and Permanent Settlement Intention: Evidence from Rural-Urban Migrants in China

Yanjiao Song et al.

Summary: This study examines the location choice and livelihoods of rural-urban migrants in China and their impact on the sustainable development of cities. The findings suggest that migrants prefer to settle in large cities rather than mega-cities. The inverse U-shaped relationship between city size and migrants' permanent settlement is explained by agglomeration economies and crowding effects. Air pollution has a significant negative impact on migrants' settlement intention.

Yong-Jun Wang et al.

Summary: China faces the largest stroke challenge worldwide, with 3.94 million new cases, 28.76 million prevalent cases, and 2.19 million deaths in 2019. Stroke is also the primary cause of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in China. Recent epidemiological surveys have provided updated data on pre-existing conditions contributing to stroke.

The relationship between age shock index, and severity of stroke and in-hospital mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke

Aysegul Demir et al.

Summary: In this study, the association between the severity of stroke, in-hospital mortality, and age shock index (SI) and age modified shock index (MSI) was examined. The findings showed a significant positive correlation between the severity of stroke and increasing age SI and age MSI, as well as a significant positive relationship between in-hospital mortality and age SI and age MSI.

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Valery L. Feigin et al.

Summary: Regularly updated data on stroke including incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and trends are crucial for evidence-based care planning. The Global Burden of Diseases Study provides comprehensive measurement of these metrics. From 1990 to 2019, while age-standardized rates improved, the number of strokes and deaths increased. Low-income countries had the highest stroke-related mortality and DALY rates, with high body-mass index being the fastest-growing risk factor.

Influence of Admission Time on Health Care Quality and Utilization in Patients with Stroke: Analysis for a Possible July Effect and Weekend Effect

Chun-Yi Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that there was no overall July effect on stroke patients in Taiwan's National Health Insurance system, but there was an unexpected July effect in regional and public hospitals. Additionally, weekend admissions led to longer hospitalization lengths for stroke patients, indicating a need for improved resource allocation on weekends in hospitals.
