Nephrogenesis, Renal Function, and Biomarkers in Preterm Newborns

Luisa Petri Correa et al.

Summary: Premature newborns have impaired kidney development and function, making the diagnosis and management of kidney injury challenging. Current biomarkers for kidney function are inconsistent, highlighting the need for further research and standardization.

Restoring SMN Expression: An Overview of the Therapeutic Developments for the Treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Tejal Aslesh et al.

Summary: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a common genetic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness. The disease is caused by the loss or mutation of the SMN1 gene, with the severity inversely correlated with the number of SMN2 gene copies. Current FDA-approved treatment strategies for SMA aim to increase functional SMN production from the SMN2 gene. Additionally, gene replacement therapy using Onasemnogene abeparvovec has also been approved.

Dexamethasone, Prednisolone, and Methyiprednisolone Use and 2-Year Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Extremely Preterm Infants

Mihai Puia-Dumitrescu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the use of corticosteroids in extremely preterm infants and evaluate their association with neurodevelopmental outcomes. The results showed that long-duration and higher cumulative dose of dexamethasone were associated with worse neurodevelopmental scores at 2 years of age.

Hepatotoxicity following administration of onasemnogene abeparvovec (AVXS-101) for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy

Deepa Chand et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the risk of liver injury associated with OA in the treatment of SMA and provides guidance on its management. Analysis of data from 325 patients receiving OA treatment showed elevated liver function test results in some patients. Most patients mitigated these adverse effects through prophylactic prednisolone treatment.

Postnatal steroid management in preterm infants with evolving bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Zeyar T. Htun et al.

Summary: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disease commonly affecting extremely preterm infants. In addition to mechanical ventilation and oxygen requirements, perinatal events may also stimulate the inflammatory cascade before delivery. Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone and hydrocortisone have proven effective for preventing and managing BPD due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Time is muscle: A recommendation for early treatment for preterm infants with spinal muscular atrophy

Bo Hoon Lee et al.

Summary: Newborn screening for SMA and increased genetic carrier screening in 33 US states have led to an increase in early, presymptomatic diagnosis of SMA. Early treatment is crucial for infants with SMA, especially for those who are presymptomatic.

Effect of Preterm Birth on Cardiac and Cardiomyocyte Growth and the Consequences of Antenatal and Postnatal Glucocorticoid Treatment

Amanda Vrselja et al.

Summary: Preterm birth can impact the long-term cardiac function and structure, with individuals showing cardiac remodelling and altered growth and function. The evidence linking preterm birth and cardiovascular disease is increasing. Improvements in perinatal care, such as glucocorticoid therapy, have enhanced survival rates for preterm infants but may come with consequences for heart health.
