Exploiting Natural Maltol for Synthesis of Novel Hydroxypyridone Derivatives as Promising Anti-Virulence Agents in Bactericides Discovery

Wan-Lin Xiao et al.

Summary: Anti-infection strategies focused on suppressing bacterial virulence factors are important for developing new antibacterial agents to combat drug resistance. In this study, we synthesized a series of 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-pyridin-4(1H)-one derivatives and tested their antibacterial activity. Compound B6 showed the highest bioactivity, effectively reducing various virulence factors and inhibiting the expression of virulence factor-related genes. Additionally, B6 exhibited moderate control efficiency against rice bacterial leaf blight, which was further enhanced by pesticide additives. These findings highlight the potential of targeting bacterial virulence factors as a new approach for treating bacterial diseases.

Novel Benzothiazole Derivatives as Potential Anti-Quorum Sensing Agents for Managing Plant Bacterial Diseases: Synthesis, Antibacterial Activity Assessment, and SAR Study

Pan-Long Chu et al.

Summary: The anti-quorum sensing activity of 53 newly prepared benzothiazole derivatives containing an isopropanolamine moiety was analyzed, and structure-activity relationships were examined. Compound D3 exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity, with an EC50 of 1.54 μg/mL against Xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae (Xoo). Compound D3 inhibited QS-regulated virulence factors to suppress bacterial infection. In vivo assays showed good control efficiency against Xoo, and addition of organic silicone or orange peel essential oil further enhanced the control efficiency. The potent anti-QS activity of these benzothiazole derivatives is significant for the development of novel bactericidal compounds.

1,3,4-Oxadiazole Derivatives as Plant Activators for Controlling Plant Viral Diseases: Preparation and Assessment of the Effect of Auxiliaries

Jin Ji et al.

Summary: Plant viral diseases cause significant economic losses in agriculture, therefore the development of efficient and low-dosage agrochemicals is important for protecting crop health and food security. In this study, a series of 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives were prepared and their inhibitory activity against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) was evaluated. Compound A14 showed excellent anti-TMV protective activity, outperforming other tested compounds. Additionally, some compounds exhibited enhanced anti-TMV activity when supplemented with auxiliaries. Biochemical assays revealed that compound A14 could suppress TMV biosynthesis and induce plant defense response. These designed compounds have outstanding bioactivity and unique action mechanisms, making them promising candidates for controlling plant viral diseases.
