Recent reduced abyssal overturning and ventilation in the Australian Antarctic Basin

Summary: Antarctic bottom water (AABW) transport in the Australian Antarctic Basin has decreased over the past decades, leading to a weakening of abyssal overturning circulation and a reduction in deep ocean oxygen content. The freshening and contraction of AABW since the 1960s have been observed but the causes and impacts of these changes are still uncertain. Observations from the Australian Antarctic Basin show a 4.0 Sv reduction in AABW transport between 1994 and 2009, during a period of strong freshening on the continental shelf. A partial recovery of 2.2 Sv in AABW transport was driven by an increase in shelf water salinity between 2009 and 2018. Over the entire study period (1994 to 2017), there was a net slowdown of -0.8 +/- 0.5 Sv decade(-1), resulting in the thinning of well-oxygenated layers and a deoxygenation rate of -3 +/- 2 mu mol kg(-1) decade(-1).
