Clinical features associated with the efficacy of chemotherapy in patients with glioblastoma (GBM): a surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER) analysis

Jieqiong Wen et al.

Summary: Chemotherapy has been shown to improve overall survival and GBM-specific survival in patients with GBM, particularly among those who are younger, have supratentorial tumors, undergo surgery, or radiotherapy. Age, race, tumor location, tumor size, and treatments are identified as independent prognostic factors for patients with glioblastoma.

Brain-targeted, drug-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles against glioblastoma cells in culture

Guliz Ak et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that BCNU and TMZ loaded SLNs can serve as an effective anticancer system for targeted GBM therapy, showing significant antitumor activity and inducing apoptosis on cancer cells, as well as being more readily taken up by MCT-1 expressing brain cells.

Transferrin-functionalized lipid nanoparticles for curcumin brain delivery

A. R. Neves et al.

Summary: Curcumin, a compound with potent neuroprotective activity, faces challenges in terms of bioavailability, leading to the development of SLNs and NLCs loaded with curcumin and functionalized with transferrin to improve its delivery to the brain. These nanosystems showed stable characteristics and enhanced permeability through the BBB, making them promising for curcumin brain delivery and protection.

Tailoring functional nanostructured lipid carriers for glioblastoma treatment with enhanced permeability through in-vitro 3D BBB/BBTB models

Tamara Zwain et al.

Summary: This study developed functional nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) to enhance the stability and permeability of docetaxel (DTX) in brain tumor cells, achieving penetration across the blood-brain barrier in a 3D in-vitro model and providing a new potential for glioblastoma therapy.

SAveRUNNER: an R-based tool for drug repurposing

Giulia Fiscon et al.

Summary: SAveRUNNER is a network-based tool for drug repurposing that predicts drug-disease associations by quantifying the interplay between drug targets and disease-associated proteins in the human interactome. The tool successfully predicted off-label drugs to be repositioned against the new human coronavirus (2019-nCoV/SARS-CoV-2) and achieved high accuracy in identifying known drug indications.

Quality by design (QbD) in the formulation and optimization of liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LCNPs): A risk based industrial approach

Tejashree Waghule et al.

Summary: The combination of lipid-based nanoparticles and lyotropic liquid crystals has resulted in the creation of a new type of nano carrier system called 'lipid-based lyotropic liquid crystals' or 'liquid crystalline nanoparticles' (LCNPs). By utilizing the quality by design (QbD) approach in the formulation of LCNPs, many unique advantages can be achieved, such as better understanding of the product and process, flexibility within the design space, effective control strategies, easy transfer from bench to bedside, and a more robust product. This work explores the application of QbD elements in the formulation of LCNPs, providing a detailed explanation with case studies and offering a foundation for QbD-driven formulation of LCNPs with a regulatory perspective.
