Effects of rhenium and high-angle grain boundaries upon the elemental distribution and microstructure of Ni-based single-crystal superalloys

Zhefeng Liu et al.

Summary: The effects of rhenium addition on the microstructure and elemental distribution of Ni-based single-crystal superalloy blades were investigated. The addition of rhenium reduced dendrite and γ' phase coarsening, and affected the partitioning of Al, Ta, Ti, Ni, and Mo elements. Furthermore, the concentration gradient and diffusion distance of alloying elements near the γ/γ' phase boundary changed significantly with rhenium addition. Additionally, the grain boundary angle affected the precipitation of a Re-enriched sigma phase from the γ' phase at the grain boundary, with both the amount of sigma phase and the concentration of Re increasing with increasing grain boundary angle.

Highly efficient and stable rhenium modified nickel catalyst for hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines

Zhuo Ma et al.

Summary: In the hydrogenation of 3-hydroxypropionitrile, the Ni-Re/SiO2 catalyst achieved a high selectivity of over 96% and a conversion rate of 100%, along with outstanding long-term stability. This can be attributed to the contributive role of Re in facilitating hydrogen dissociation and intermediates adsorption.

Nonmetallic trace elements induced rhenium co-segregation in nickel S5 [001](210) symmetrical tilt grain boundary

Hongtao Xue et al.

Summary: The thermal and mechanical instability of nano- and coarse-grained polycrystalline metals derives from the unstable grain boundaries (GBs). In this study, the segregation behavior of six non-metallic impurities at the S5 [001](210) GB of nickel-based alloys, their co-segregation with Re element, and the changes in GB properties induced by segregation were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that nonmetallic elements can segregate to the Ni GB and stabilize it, but they also embrittle the GBs except B. Presegregation of X elements induced the segregation of Re, which lowered the excess energy and enhanced the cohesive strength of all X-segregated GBs.

Rhenium mineral resources: A global assessment

Tim T. Werner et al.

Summary: Rhenium (Re) is crucial in modern transportation and has been considered critical due to complex supply chains and limited substitutes. Estimating its global resources is difficult due to its production as a by-product from molybdenum (Mo) concentrates. However, this study provides a new database that estimates 3-4 times more global Re resources compared to previous estimates. Therefore, the current global Re resources are sufficient to meet global demand for centuries, and the key for future supply lies in choosing lower cost and environmentally/socially sustainable supply chains.

Synthesis and characterization of new families of lanthanide perrhenate complexes

Elizabeth A. Decoteau et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis, structures, and characterization of two new families of trivalent lanthanide perrhenate complexes, along with the expansion of a third known family. The structural features of these complexes exhibit properties influenced by contracting ionic radii and increasing Pearson hardness upon traversing the lanthanide series.
