Formation of V2AlC MAX phase by SHS involving magnesium reduction of V2O5

V. I. Vershinnikov et al.

Summary: In this study, the V2AlC MAX phase was synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in molten NaCl salt, followed by acid leaching. The resulting powder product contains V2AlC, VAl, VC, MgO, MgAl2O4 phases. By adjusting the initial material ratios, a V2AlC powder with up to 95% purity was obtained.

Formation of Ti2AlNx MAX phase by Hydride Cycle and SHS methods

A. G. Aleksanyan et al.

Summary: A new approach for Ti2AlNx MAX phase synthesis using highly efficient methods, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and Hydride Cycle (HC), is proposed in this study. Two different synthesis methods were developed, with differences in precursors and forming methods. The structure and formation processes were studied by analyzing intermediate products with XRF, DTA, and chemical analysis methods. The synthesized Ti2AlN0.63 and Ti2AlN0.25 compounds were identified as single-phase MAX phases with hcp crystal structure and the same lattice parameters. Considering the advantages of SHS and HC methods, the developed synthesis methods for Ti2AlNx MAX phase are recommended as new, resource-saving, economical, and low-cost technologies.

Summary: In this study, a composite Ti3SiC2/TiC MAX-phase coating was prepared by detonation spraying method, and it was found that the coating annealed at 800 degrees Celsius exhibited the best properties. The coating showed higher hardness, lower coefficient of friction, good adhesion strength, and corrosion resistance.

Summary: This paper reports results on self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of cast materials in the Mo-Al-C system. It has been demonstrated that, by varying the percentages of the components in the starting mixture, one can influence synthesis parameters and the phase composition and microstructure of the final products. Dilution of the starting mixture with Al2O3 inert additions has been shown to increase the percentage of the required phase in the synthesis products.

The Synthesis of Cast Materials Based on the MAX Phases in a Cr-Ti-Al-C System

Summary: This study combines two variants of the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process to obtain cast materials based on the Cr2AlC and (Cr0.7Ti0.3)(2)AlC MAX phases, showing that the ratio of initial reagents has a substantial effect on synthesis parameters and phase composition of the desired products. The possibility of obtaining a cast material based on the titanium-doped Cr2AlC phase is demonstrated, with the end product containing carbide and intermetallic impurities influenced by the insufficient lifetime of the melt formed in the combustion wave.

Summary: This study examined the properties of Ti3Al1-xSixC2 MAX-phase alloys, showing good crystal structure, metallic properties with high residual resistivity, and a small positive magnetoresistance effect. Silicon doping had a weak impact on resistivity while the magnetoresistance exhibited a quadratic dependence on the magnetic field. Specific heat data indicated slight variations in Debye temperatures and Sommerfeld coefficient values with changes in Si content. Band structure calculations supported experimental results, highlighting the contribution of Al and Si s-electrons to metallic conductivity.
